Why do the majority of scientists think that science and any religion are mutually exclusive? We owe modern science as we know it to Christians (who happen to fall under the umbrella of any religion )

True the people were christian but the religion itself had no place in their work, so yes we owe it to christians, but not christianity itself, thus preserving the separation between science & religion. And if it did it usually was to cover up something that was later explained (like how Newton, when confronted with the small inconsistencies in his theory, proposed that sometimes god had to recalibrate the universe).
This makes me think of people who believe in intelligent design, and that makes me frustrated.
