Can I adjust the PING? What does it do, what does it mean when it's too high, can I even minipulate it or am I stuck with ping?? Thanks for responding

you cant control ping (for the most part). Its how many milliseconds your behind the server, or something like that. there are many factors that determine ping, such as distance from the server origin, and your internet connection.

Ping is the response rate of information sent back and forth on the internet. So when you are online you always having ping, because information is being sent back and forth. High Ping means that your computer is sending information slowly, usually anything over 200 is considered bad, especially for gaming.

It is not something you can just set lower at the click of a button. If your ping rate is high you can help lower it by cleaning up your computer (defragmenting it, etc), and making sure other computers that are hooked up to the same network are not connected, but if they are make sure they are not downloading anything. Also update all your drivers so that your comp isn't slowing your ping down! A fast internet provider is also important.

That helps, I have Qwest which should be fast enough, I'm running BF2 off of a laptop though, the stress of the program could be making my ping higher I suppose. I'll try defragmenting, It's a fairly new notebook though it shouldn't be bogged down with useless @#$%

Yeah mess around with some stuff, and you'll get it working. High ping isnt that bad anyway cause it changes all the time.

The word Ping came from submarines when they would send a "ping" out they could tell where enemy ships are by telling how long it would take for the ping sound to return to them. So pretty much ping is how long it takes for your computer to send and receive things from the server. The lower the ping the better. As for lowering your ping i would make sure that anything using up your internet connection is closed because that might raise your ping.

Yea thats really funny...I thought subs used sonar back in the day. Ping is actually an acronym for Packet Internet Grouper which is a networking term, I dont think it had anything to do with sonar but its a good way to describe how it works. Ping is an ICMP echo message and reply that's used to test the reachability of a network device. Theres alot of things that can affect the ping rate and most you cant control. Just try playing on servers that have on average a lower ping rate than others. Limited bandwidth can cause a high ping during certain peak hours.
