Otellini says that Intel isn't "up"grading to Vista until SP1, and if it isn't good enough for Chipzilla, its not good enough for me.

That isn't to say that I don't appreciate all those who've volunteered their time, effort, and money to enter into the "paid" portion of the Great Vista Beta Test of Ought and Seven. Man, you guys rock, and I'm sure we'll get a product worth upgrading to to honor your collective sacrifice. :salute:
Linux panics, DOS, well let's just say the words "don't go there" apply.

There is no real Vista beta test. Why? Because unlike every other MS operating system, they actually made it stable on launch. No doubt there'll be security flaws, but 7 years on, MS was still patching them in XP.

The whole "don't upgrade till SP1" is a load of bollocks. If anyone has had experience with Win XP's launch, or even worse, Win ME, then they'll likely think that, but it's not like that anymore.

MS has indeed learnt a lot from the XP and ME launch. Vista is very secure even without any SP, no doubt about it. You who still think it's worth waiting, you have to update yourself as well. See the world as it is, with Vista being a great OS.

Never had huge problems with dos. 4gw sometimes needed a boot disk in order to free up enough memory to load all the drivers and run programs productively, but that was as much a limitation of the hardware as the O/S. And linux? Nevah, nevah, nevah had Ubuntu crash on me, and I was originally quite skeptical of getting away from the CLI.

Bollocks? Here we call them dollars, and I intend on saving about 250--indeed, a load--of them by waiting until there is a compelling reason for me to splash out on an O/S that's largest advantage thus far is that it is Shiny. And it really, really is, no doubt. 'k? Very pretty!

        Ooooooh + Ahhhhhhh < $250, thanks. :)
        Hrumph.

I'm buying hardware soon and food for the fur ball; you're equally entitled to do what you will with your bollocks.

Back to the forum at large--what are you early Vista adopters doing with Vista that you couldn't do with XP SP? I'm curious!

          ^^

          Well, where do I start?

Firstly, and most obviously, we have the amazing inferface which is so much better than XP's and so much better than any WB skin I'd seen. Then there is the Media Centre. I love that thing, it actually makes your computer feel like a true Home Cinema. Startups are so much faster with Vista. Performance, like I say, in games is amazingly better with Vista. We also get the really nice Chess Game and the othe games.

I'm sure theres a lot more things I could have mentioned but thats all I can think of at the moment(I'm on my dad's pc, my dad jumped on mine before I could get onto it :/).

Also, for once Vista feels like a new Operating system. Win98 felt like Win95 v2. And XP felt like Win98 v2.5, or Win95 v3.5.

I don't really see why I should promote Vista to you though. I've got Vista, you havn't, your loss really.

Fair enough, I was under the impression everyone here was made of money. What else explains the 8800GTX rigs?

As for doing whatever, it's an OS. The programs make it, not the OS itself. Speaking of new functions, how about pretty much the most complete control panel I have seen work? They finally added a decent partition manager, I can resize my root partition in about 2 seconds with it (yes, while I'm using it). The search function is very useful, the UAC system was long overdue (I still use native administrator mode though, too much hassle with the cmd prompt).

The theme speaks for itself, and soon, being able to address more than 4GB of RAM shall help me a great deal

There are plenty of things you can't do with XP SP, but I'm not arsed to find them. Oh, and the three finger salute actually works in 99% of cases, if a program freezes the whole system it can still show up. The only way it won't is if the program completely gridlocks the PC, on a level that even Dice couldn't do with their "I'm going to ping every damn server out there and you're going to have no computer for the 10 minutes I do so" attitude.

I was under the impression that the largest advantage is the stability it has to offer over XP, I've only ever had 1 BSOD since the release, and that was because of nVidia's drivers.

Also, I think your PC is a bit outdated, Camper. It desperately needs upgrading.

Of course, I was thinking I should upgrade to a 286 with 640k RAM, do you think this can run BF2 on all high?

Vista is like any other OS when it was first released, unsupports many apps & games and does contain many bugs, if it was me to upgrade i would be waiting atleast 12 months, just to make sure that all the bugs and compatibility issues have being ironed out.

Mmm, I'd say with the one in your sig you'd just scrape 30FPS on all low 640x480 and with the 640k you'd get the same FPS on medium.

                    Back on topic,

Also I decided I wanted to take a shot at map making and I noticed when I tried to install the program it said "This program is only compatible with Windows XP." So, I change it to XP SP2 compatability and run it again and it installs and runs perfectly. The morale of the story is, the Compatability Mode options ACTUALLY WORK!!! WOOOHOOOO!

Have you tried Vista at all, or are you just posting BS? Either way you are completely wrong, and you have no idea what you are talking about..

AFAIK, the only bug I had was the hibernation + USB thing, but MS fixed that in a week.

I have Vista, and for me it's bad.

BF2/BF2142 run slower, I get about 20 FPS lower than XP, and lag spikes.

Updated everything, latest drivers, my PC isn't so old:
                                Athlon 3000+ overclocked to 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 7800GTX 256MB, 320GB SATA, Audigy 2 ZS soundcard.

I have some "lag" spikes on Vista that don't happen in BF2.

And the Creative Audigy 2 ZS drivers suck, sound quality is worse than in XP, and I get constant "popping" and "crackling".

I did nothing wrong. A clean install of Vista, ran microsoft updates, installed audio drivers (latest from Creative), updated the video drivers to 100.65, then tried 101.41, no real improvements.

For benchmark example, 3DMark05 under Vista shows 7800 points while in XP they are 8200 points. 3DMark06 runs only 1% slower in Vista.

My computer is stable on Vista and XP, I ran several "torture" tests during hours. Wasted hours...

Unfortunately Vista has shown no benefit for me until now. If someone could give some suggestion...
