Windows Vista Pro & Cons...

Hey everyone,

thinking about getting a new rig and i wanted to know if i should get vista or just keep using XP...

what are your thoughts? especially if you own vista...
(dont know if this as been discussed)

I disagree

Of course it has its bugs now, and thats a huge con, but after they start to fix everything, it seems like it will be a good os.

Say what you will but as of now VISTA is 20-60fps slower than XP Pro!!!! I don't care if VISTA supports DX10 or that it is new and sleek, because it is a memory hog....you need at least 1GB or RAM to run VISTA...to hell with RAM for your game VISTA will chew it all up. Once new games are written for VISTA, and for 64bit technology and DX10 is released, then VISTA might be okay at gaming, but for now STICK WITH WIN XP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Vista (and not "VISTA!!!!!") needs alot of RAM, but that evens says in the requirements...
And BF2 is not slower with Vista, rather the contrary (yes I own Vista).

Changing to Vista now is a very good idea. And by the way, I have yet to experience my first Vista bug (in the final release) since maybe three months ago. That basically meant that Vista is extremly stable at the moment, so what you guys are saying is basically bullsh*t.

Vista is by far the most stable OS I have ever used. Even with Linux, DOS, Windows from 3.1 to XP, I got BSODs/panics in the first 2-3 months of installation. Nothing here.

Yea, i cant stand these people who are saying vista is total trash when they dont even own it. Then there are the people who actually own it and says its great, and it probably is.

Only thing keeping me from going to Vista full time are sound and video drivers. The sound should be taken care of this week as Creative are supposed to be releasing official (and not beta) drivers for both Audigy's and X-Fi's. As for Nvidia the latest beta's (101.41) are much better than any of the previous drivers, but even then the performance I get in BF2 is not the same as in XP.

And for those that say Vista is a memory hog, after startup and checking in Task Manager the total is less than 400 mb for me (and yes that is with Aero enabled). Also it would be nice if those making the comments about Vista using so much memory and causing slowdowns in games, they need to learn how Vista (and XP for that matter) handle memory/running processes. When running a game/program that requires lots of memory Vista forces all other running processes onto the pagefile. Why do you think that people with 1 gb or less complain about how long it takes to do anything in XP after quitting BF2 (music still playing, everything slow). It is because it takes a bit to fully release/shutdown BF2 and start moving everything back to ram from the pagefile.

i own vista u idiot. i just reverted back to xp pro because bf2 and all other games were extremely slow

By saying "Cons: Everything" it makes it look very much like you don't own Vista. Surely as you own Vista you would be able to provide some examples of things that went wrong.

Vista for me? Brilliant. Performance? Amazing, BF2/BF2142/Quake 4/Oblivion all run about 5-10FPS faster. Bugs? I've had... wait for it.... ONE new bug! Vista doesn't seem to like my old CD-RW drive, which doesn't really affect me much as I just use my DVD drive. I do still get crashes, but I had them in the first place with XP. I've had no problems with nVidia/Creative drivers whatsoever... I have a 7900GS and a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy [BE00].

If you turned off your "game enhancement programs" (read: cheats) as you implied you had in another thread, you might actually get better performance.

If someone can tell one good reason to update to Vista I'll get it tomorrow. SO far I've found ZERO reasons. XP looks good enough, WB will make it look even better than Vista. Vista pretty much proves the point that people are stupid, but there's still some hope, because some news site told that Microsoft blames pirates for bad sales.

And so far there are half a million reasons to not to upgrade to Vista. But Vista did have very good impact on computer industry: Many computer retailers have started offering Linux as an option to Windows, because Vista sucks so bad. And I believe many people will change to Linux because of Vista in a few years. Linux has developed into a very decent system in last few years. Vista is pretty much what Linux actually needed.

Just cool looking Linux vids. Imagine Windows running on one side as gaming platform!

I do have used Vista even though I don't have it installed right now, Instead I got linux. Vista does have some pro's, but just being a bit better than XP is not worth the change. Yet.

I admit that in the beginning my almost only reason to change to Vista was the fact that I had followed it from the early betas up to RTM, and the fact that I wanted something new, with new looks and new functionality.

But I have many, many reasons to keep Vista. It has proven itself fast and very reliable, very game-friendly and very nice overall.

I didn't know DOS or Linux would BSOD/panic. Learn something every day...

Otellini says that Intel isn't "up"grading to Vista until SP1, and if it isn't good enough for Chipzilla, its not good enough for me.

That isn't to say that I don't appreciate all those who've volunteered their time, effort, and money to enter into the "paid" portion of the Great Vista Beta Test of Ought and Seven. Man, you guys rock, :rock: and I'm sure we'll get a product worth upgrading to to honor your collective sacrifice. :salute:
