    processors

hey guys, im going to custom build a computer sooooo im kinda stuck on which processor to get...they are the same price
    1. Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX6700 (4x 2.66GHz/8MB L2 Cache/1066FSB)
    2. Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor X6800 (2x 2.93GHz/4MB L2 Cache/1066FSB)

Another thing i dont get is the 4mb/8mb l2 cache...what is that? and im guessing higher the MB, the better? I would really appreciate some oppionions about which processor to choose. thanks a lot!

    Re: processors

Get the QX6700, it's 4 processors in one as opposed to the 2 in the X6800. More cache is better but it doesn't matter too much in this case, considering both processors are absolute beasts here.

Unless your doing some serious picture or movie editing, quad core will be a huge waste of money. Your much better off getting the Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor X6800 (Or even the E6600 if you are okay with Overclocking), and use the money you save towards sometjhing else like a DX10 card.

Look at the CPUs s/he is considering and you're telling me they honestly won't be able to afford a DX10 card on top?

The quad core is the way to go - sure you can get an X6800, it'll be nice and fast for the next... 7 months, but when all the multithreaded **** comes out, the QX6700 is going to be king. Not too long either. A lot of things already support multiple CPUs...

Yes, some apllications will become multithreaded, but most games will not. This is because the processes that happen are serial and not parallel, and therefore canot be divided over two processors. Some parts will be multithreaded but the advantage of having a quad core over a dual core in games will be very small.

I guess you could play BF2 whilst whilst encoding DVD's but, honestly, how many people do that?

hey thanks a lot for your views on things, funny thing is that those two processors are the same price...=) i'll probably ending up getting the quad core.

I'm talking about the future. Of course, if s/he is going to replace this CPU within 1 1/2 years, there is no point in getting a quad core, but if it's to last 4 years as it really should do, then the quad core flat out wins.

Those with quad cores do :P The only reason people don't multitask like that is because they don't have the CPU power to do so.

Dont be silly, if u get the quad core, you are futureproofing ur comp for the next few years

imo, wait until April for a huge price drop on quad and core2's. the quads are supposed to drop into the $500+ range.

Yea, we heard that crap about dual core...TWO YEARS AGO! How many games utilize more than one core today? Is it 3 or 4 whole games?

By the time quad cores are useful for gaming, that quad core will cost one-fifth the current asking price. That will be the time to buy it.

As someone else already pointed out, with the exception of professional work quad cores are a giant waste of money. Only the boy with pimples living next door will be impressed.
