slow start ups

hello
i have a intel pentium 4, 2 cpu processor (3.06,3.06GHZ)
when ever i start my pc everything is good, then when you have the windows xp logo and 4 blue blocks skidding accros a loading bar it seems to take for ever to start, after that has loaded i get a blank screen with a short white line at the top left for at leaste 20 seconds, then comes the blue welcome screen, another 20 seconds wasting my time, but when windows starts i have used msconfig to take all the useless programes off, so windows starts fast! please help its annoying!!!

run disk defrag it could take a couple of hours

i used norton speed disk which analysis the disk etc, i done that but still, i will try defrag

Bear in mind that if you keep trouble-shooting the issue and can't resolve it, reinstalling windows is probably your last best shot.

Under MSCONFIG, I know you said you turned off all the useless start programs, but what about the processes? If you go under processes, check "exclude MS processes", and then uncheck all the remaining processes, reboot, and if that solves your problem then you know you've got a wacky process. From that point, you just figure out which process it is that's mucking things up.

To me, it sounds like you've got bats in your registry, but that's just conjecture at this point.

But try a scan disk and defrag. Also, download a program called ccleaner its free and can clean out any unwanted files and fix the registery!!!

Also what you described with the white line you may be having a video card problem.

Also what you can try is posting a HiJack This log..Heres the link and a step by step on what to do then we can see if theres any problems in your registry..http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

norton system works does all that, i have fixed,cleaned my registry, i dont think its time for a format- ive been using my pc for a couple of weeks- 170gb free from my drive! i got no spyware or anything it just slowed down all the sudden. and i cant find proseses in msconfig bit more info m8 thanks!

oops. msconfig-->services-->hide all ms services-->then see what's left and try shutting down things that might cause chug.

"services" :slaps forehead: not "processes". my bad.

edit, also norton packages are pretty well known far and wide as being a resource piggy. are you using systemworks or just the speed disk component?

I often judge my systems performance by counting the blue bars...it isn't conclusive by any means.

I used to have a nice, fast 4.5 bars before a load...simply changing my audio driver increased it to 9.5-12.5 bars for example.

It isn't always something you must "fix", sometimes it just has to be that way if you are happy with your current various drivers, as it is in my case.

mine is about 15 bars....and about audio driver i recently updated it because i had problems with my mic. but it didnt fix it and so i left the driver, does that mean my sound driver slows it down?

Using programs like Norton System works does not always work, and instead Norton programs are memory hogs. It will be best to learn how the computer works, and what is causing the problem than covering it up wth a defective app.

I have stripped my XP down that i only ever have a max of 13 processes running in the background, leaving plenty of memory for my games or apps i use.

What I typed was kind of a guess(process of elimination), because I always monitor that bar and the audio driver was the ONLY change I had made in months...

other than taking a few seconds longer at the very start of your computing day, it shouldn't affect anything else speed-wise...talking about the amount of bars it takes to load.

i have fixed the problem to slow startups and slow performance, and the problem was (drum rolls please).......norton internet securtiy 2006!! after un installing it and putting on Ad-aware se,AVG,kerio and spybot instead my pc is running very fast now, infact 4 blue bars go, and the welcome screen takes less than a second to dis appear, **** YOU NORTON!
