As title, I'm attempting here to overturn people's opinion of the new OS from just reading articles on the web, and not actually trying the OS themselves, or not using the OS as it should be used.
I am a gamer, and I hate MS, however Vista is amazing. Once the drivers are sorted for certain high end hardware and a larger driver base is created, not to mention DX10, it will piss all over XP in terms of usability, indexing, security and most importantly gaming. I will eat my hat if it doesn't.
Got a USB flash pen? Plug it in and you can set Vista to use it as your disk cache. So instead of the crummy 8MB or 16MB you have on your HDD, you can have 1GB upwards depending on the size of the pen, vastly improving seek/write/read times to levels that we will never see even in Windows 2000 servers.
I have been running Vista on and off since Beta2 but I haven't even scratched the surface on what this OS is capable of. The search engine is simply amazing and what they have done with office is fantastic!!!!
Before, I just installed it and used it like I did XP...... now I have learned to use the search function, grouped favorites, office ribbon, indexing, doc previewing and so on
For example..........
Let's say you receive an email via Outlook 2007 with an mp3 attachment. The file is called 01.mp3 with the artists/track info stored in the meta tags. You move the email to a folder and forget about it. In a few months time you remember about the song but haven't a clue where it is; did you save the attachment to your my music folder; move the email somewhere; delete the email? All you need to do is click on the window pearl and in the search box type in something you can remember, be it the filename, artist name in the meta tag, email subject line or a piece of text from the email body. Within seconds Vista has found your song (due to its indexing system) simply hit return and it will start to play the song in media player.
I could go on and on about the new features (document previewing, Vista remembering what you do when you do it and preloading data into cache, usb pen drives as fast disk caching.....the list is endless).
Say everyday at the office you load outlook at 9am Mon - Fri, then on the weekends play games. Vista remembers and pre-loads the outlook data before you double click the icon so it loads instantly. Cool eh? Then on the weekend it pre-loads Directx stuff ready for your gaming session
For the admins, Exchange 2007, although very expensive it has some really cool new features such as the ability to use a standard phone to call your inbox and use voice to send commands such as read emails, delete, calendar queries etc etc. Inbuilt malware and virus scanner which looks to be pretty decent, and a MUCH needed replication system which can either replicate between servers or to a separate database, allow users to recover deleted emails and can also archive emails which all companies will be required to do by law. Fortunately/Unfortunately it is 64bit only but with the enhanced disk usage you can offset that to use for archiving/storage
Do not diss Vista. It will change the way we think of operating systems. Take it from someone in the know.
