    Re: TFT monitor

    **** all lol.

you wont be able to see any difference but it all does come down to personal prefence. My screen is 4ms and i can sit infron of it for hours, but at collede we have a ****ty LG flat screens which hurt my eys abit. Your best bet is to borrow it for a couple of days to see if u like it with your set up

ONCE AGAIN it comes down to personal preference!!!

Depends on how far apart your eyes are spaced; 'twas a godsend for ET and family.

'k, not really. Widescreens are great if the application can be run natively in a rectangular (lengthwise) res. Otherwise, the image will be scaled with varying results.

I have 3 computers & 3 LCDs, a 19" WS 8ms, a 19" ws 5ms & a 19" regular 2ms. Tested all 3 on my 7900 the 8ms was playable but ghosting was noticable when moving mouse side to side the ghost would follow about 1/2". The 5ms was less noticable /w ghost following maybe a 1/4". Finally the 2ms ghosting is there when moving the mouse very very fast and the ghost follows close no more than 1/8".

Hmmm i dont care about fast mouse movements only like if it gets generally annoying when gaming

                let me get this straight

                1MS is 1000th of a second

so 8MS is one colour change every 8/1000th of a second

that means 125 colour changes a second right?

                sounds fine to me

If it all would be about reaction time, like 5 or 8ms I'd already have a TFT monitor, but the fact is, there are no TFT monitor coming even close to CRT in performance. At least in widescreen form (the only reason to buy TFT over CRT). So if you're a professional gamer playing also games faster than BF2 (like Quake, UT) CRT is the only choice, or otherwise you just accept the fact you can't be better than others, only average and that's what you'll be forever, no more.

Also, a TFT monitor has maximum refresh rate of 60Hz (sometimes 75Hz with analog input). It means the maximum framerate it's capable of is 60. Now 60 fps is 16.7ms. I run my CRT at 120 or 100Hz while playing. I couldn't even imagine playing at 75Hz. Once Source had changed to 75 on its own and I felt strange and almost sick whole the night until I found what was wrong.

                    Re: TFT monitor

lucky seven that article isnt brand new as TFTs have come a long way in a three years plus its a dell TFT probably with 25ms

60hz on a CRT isnt the same as having a 60hz TFT monitor

As a in a CRT a cathode tube constantly fires in sycronization but in a TFT its more complex and each pixel changes colour un-sycronised most new TFTs come with 75hz nowadays anyway and i run my monitor at 75hz if im running 1600x1200 resolution on older games and its completly fine

most people including myself find 60hz intolerable on a CRT however on a TFT its ok

Im not trying to provoke and argument about which is the best CRTs are still king by quite a distance

I can bear the flickering, I can bear headache, everything, but I can't stand the delay caused by low refresh rate. I know it's not that bad, but for example 75hz on CRT does not flicker for me, I can use it on desktop, but I'll see the difference in a game immediately. It's not just as smooth and sharp and accurate. It makes me feel uncomfortable and increses stress level. I've played with LCD's and I can tell the difference. Basically you got to learn shooting and moving again. It takes a couple of months maybe, don't know how good one could become.

I know some professionals play with LCD's nowadays already, but many are still using CRT's. And for example Q4 has built in FPS limiter at 60fps to decrease performance difference between CRT and LCD. And this thread is not about it, 5 vs 8ms does not make difference as long as the input lag is similar.

And if you look further in the article you'll find more displays tested. I know many serious players use ViewSonic VX922 since it''s the fastest LCD atm. So far there are no ultra fast widescreens.

Nevertheless, most TFT's are ok for gaming. Casual player won't notice difference, but in fact, there is a huge difference. Worst thing I could imagine would be performance decrease in my playing which I wouldn't notice.

Went from a 17' CRT to a 19' TFT noticed slower (although marginal) response times and adjusted to it, never had any problem with flickering TBH.
