The real concern I see for Vista, and note we've been attacking this issue all throughout the BETA and Release Canidate periods is, if you are using Audigy, Audigy 2, or X-Fi (any series or model). Although Creative's drivers have gotten alot better over time. They still lack support for any kind of Surround Sound features. So all you get is 2 channel. As far as ATI, AMD, NVIDIA, RealTek, Silicon Image, Promise are concerned, they have been VERY supportive in releasing decent drivers for their chipsets. I was able to get 6-channel working ok with my onboard RealTek sound chipset, which Vista also had the drivers for, but you know how integrated sound is for games. :-P
Now on another note, I have done ALOT of testing on many systems and chipsets. If you have Nforce / 2 / 3. You DO NOT need ANY drivers from NVIDIA, for Vista 32 or 64-bit. They are all built in - right out of the box. Nforce-based integrated Ethernet cards on the other hand are not, but have a working driver via Vista's Windows Update. Which works great. Marvell Ethernet also on Windows Update. Broadcom wired / wireless Ethernet for the most part are built in. ATI is also built in for most chipsets. But like 2000 or XP, u'll still want to go and download the official Vista drivers for better Aero performance as well as for DX9 /10 Games of any kind. Although a game may run OK with Vista's built in display drivers, always get the latest official from your video card manufac. website. If you have any ATI Motherboard chipsets, Nforce 4 / 5, SLI or Cross-Fire. Get official drivers for those chipsets. Ok, now on to software. If you use Nero or PowerDVD, be sure to get Nero 7. It works great in Vista, has it's own Media Center, an audio recording program, and DVD player (so no need for PowerDVD). And to keep you future-safe, it also supports HD-DVD & Blu-Ray burning. I use Nero7 in both XP and Vista and I must say what a full plate Ahead has put out this time around. Although it took them a while to make Vista a priority, the last few releases and updates work fine under Vista. If you are a PowerDVD user, versions 4, 5 & 6 will not work under Vista, you must get version 7 if you want to use PowerDVD under Vista, but like I said, Nero7 covers that, as it comes with ShowTime3 for playing DVD movies and can be used as an audio playback program for just about ANY audio file or video file, it will even play Apple's MOV files, but you still must have some sort of basic Apple QuickTime installed, so Nero will have the appropriate codec for decoding and playing MOV files. Nero does have it's own decoder for playback of MPEG4 A/V files though which is nice.
DX9 games like... BF2, BF2142, GTA: San Andreas, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Hitman: Contracts, Company of Heros, RTCWolfenstein, Quake4, Half-Life2 (along with any other Steam programs, like CSS or DoD), NeedforSpeed Underground2, NFS: Most Wanted, NFS: Carbon...all work great under Vista with right around the same performance as XP (depending of your machine specs). I have personally tested all of the above games and although some folks have had problems. I have not. And NO I don't have any latest and greatest system. Although I have tested on quite a few, using ATI Cross-Fire, NVidia NForce3,4,5 & SLI setups. My personal gaming desktop is only a AMD 754 socket setup with Athlon 64 3500, NForce3 Ultra and AGP8X with ATI Radeon X850 Platinum, 1GB Corsair XMS DDR400 & WD Raptor X-150GB SATA HD. Again all the games above work great even of this mid-range system.
Oh and like everything else in the Tech-World, new features and technology come into focus quick, sure you been wondering and havn't seen much from DX10 cards or games yet. But by summer time '07 or this holiday season, you'll be saying how ugly and un-life-like DX9 games look compaired to DX10. And DX10 will fully support widescreen in ALL games released for PC, as well as all HDTV resolutions. Weee!!!!
And not to bash :) SO please don't reply all upset or defensive, but just what games are you gonna play on a freakin' MAC!

Ok i just installed bf2 and 1.41 or whatever update on my new dell laptop with vista os. Punkbuster kicks me out of servers with the message : invalid O/S privileges or some crap. Help. Thanks. F*** microsoft!

right click on your bf2 shortcut and select properties then tick the box run as admin
