I've been playing BF2 on my rig for over a year now and all was sweet until I changed from using a USB headset to analogue audio out.
System Abit an8sli Fata1ity, Athlon64 3500+, 2gig ram, Radeon X850XT
I did this because I play with budddies and we use skype for comms whilst playing. Interestingly Skype tends to hijack the CPU of the best machine in the group so my game performance used to drop over time.
So easy enough I thought. I use a laptop to run Skype and feed the audio from the gaming machine into the line in on the laptop and use that to mix audio with the comms channels. But when I went to do this the audio was all wierd. The arty was sounding all the time and voices would keep repeating. which was not the case with the usb headset. This must be a problem with the soundcard built into the motherboard (Realtek AC97) as the problem goes away if I select software rendering in the game options instead of hardware and reduce the sound setting to medium.
But this solution seems to be slowing up my framerate in certain situations the most notable of which is inside the Warehouse on Karkand when there are a lot of players in the area, making the game almost unplayable.
Has anyone has a similar problem with this board and haver they tried updating sound drivers? Looking at the abit download site they are offering the Realtek Audio Driver v3.76 (Released Date: 2005-08-19) where as the realtek site has a driver for AC97 codecs version A3.97 dated 2007/1/12
Will the later Realtek driver work with the hardware on the AN8SLi and will it solve the problem? If so will I be able to go back to hardware sound rendering?
Or do I abandon the onboard sound and go for a seperate soundcard like one of the X-fi series.
Help very much appreciated.
