Hey guys ive had this annoying problem going on for a while now is it a heat issue or could it be the RAM on my 7900gt? or could it be as simple as a driver problem (latest by the way) http://www.xfire.com/screenshots/zdooby/

Could this end up being an excuse to buy that shiny new 8800?

your temps sound fine. If you know how to strip and totally clean the GPU (mainly the fan sink runoffs) then repaste everything afterwards to make sure its all seating properly then you could do a basic service.

Do you use the stock thermal tape for your RAM or did you go with some Arctic Silver? My Silencer sits too far away from the RAM chips to use anything other than the thermal pads...

Or you could just blast it with some commpressed air. If you have one of the older 7900s it could just be a design fault, as there were lots of problems with the earlier ones. It might require an rma.

I used to use arctic silver on the old agp 6600gt I had that was always overheating and producing artifacts. luckily I could bridge the gap. If the gap is too large then it is easy to cut copper strip to fit the gap, although keeping it in place whilst you refit the HSF is a pain!

one option right now could be to buy a Zalman flower aftermarket cooler, like the vf700, check your card can fit it. the unit will fit on loads of cards, so even if it doesn't fix the problem, it might carry on to your next card. I used one on a sapphire x800gto2 that sounded like a 737 on 100% fanspeed and it worked great although understand won;'t fit my present card without additional heatsink bits

Some cards have been known to have batch problems and no telling where the place that sold it to you got it from. always keep in mind RMA possibilities when doing any aftermarket alteration on it

Because it looks like a memory problem, it's your memory running too high clock, too low voltage or probably too hot and creating errors. The easiest fix would probably be to loosen memory (if nothing else helps) timing by a notch. It will slightly decrease performance, but usually that's fixed by OC'ing memory higher, but in your case it might not become in question.

thanks guys i just fixed it the card just got too hot in my case good cleaning was all it took thanks for the help

where was the dust? in the run offs from the fan in an enclosed unit? if so, if that problem bugs you too much, the zalman flower is the way to go if you can fit one. Won't ever suffer from that particular problem again

The only problem with the zalman vf700 is that it doesn't exhaust the hot air, so whatever heat your gpu produces is free to circulate around the case. I use an arctic cooling ati silencer (had to improvise some ramsinks) and I find that it keeps my entire case cooler by blowing the hot air directly out the back.

Still, the zalman is a great quality cooler, and unlike my silencer, you can migrate it to your next gpu just fine. There's a lot to be happy about a big chunk of copper and a quiet, fast fan. I just don't like turning a blow dryer on all the components underneath. :)

As a smoker (damn, I keep trying to give up) my experiences with closed fan systems have been rather bad. Hence why I use flowers now for everything.

2x80mm fans sucking in, behind HDD's, 2x80mm fans at rear of case sucking out, 1x 120mm fan on side panel sucking out is all I need to have everything chilled. My new mobo is arranged very strangely, so I'll see what happens next summer, but at the moment the big freeze is expected to hit here in the UK come saturday, so I don't think i'll have to worry about overheating for a while :)
