    Dream machine a reality...at last:)

Check this...ive been playing on a high end laptop for months now and edcided to invest in a new desktop.

    Alienware was my first choice.

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories

It's the high end version of this option, anyone got any improvements?

I've never, ever bought a pc off the shelf and that's the only reason why I've ever had a pc that I could game on! Soaking up the isntalled software on a retail machine, I always estimate that the price I paid building my own is half what the shop sells similar specced retail machines at. ie. I spend ÂŁ900, the shop wants ÂŁ1800

Strictly speaking, computers make poor investments, falling somewhere between shares of Enron and confederate bills.

Of course, it looks very, very fast. But, as everyone else has said, you could save yourself half-to-two thirds the cost, build it yourself, get better quality components, and learn some new stuff to boot.

On the other hand, I admire and applaud you for your giving nature. I think your willingness to continue to support Dell, in spite of all their human (and subhuman) flaws, is quite noble. I couldn't be nearly that charitable towards them after several "experiences" with getting our Gold Plan Computers at work serviced; you're a better philanthropist than I'll ever be, you self-sacrificing, giving person.

Then again, if you're just dying to give your money away, have you considered building a better computer yourself and donating the left over $1500 to the Red Cross?

Just to give you an idea on how big the price difference is, I made nearly the EXACT same computer, pretty much the same stats on every peice of equipment (except the monitor I chose has a better response time and contrast ratio).
I used the default equipment for this: http://www.alienware.com/configurato...de=SKU-DEFAULT
                Which is $2,399

                And now on Newegg:
                SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model SH-S182D - OEM $28.99

COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel, SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail $10.00 Mail-in Rebate $49.99

Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $69.99

                Acer AL1717BBM Black 17" 8ms LCD Monitor - Retail $154.99

                eVGA 512-P2-N635-AR Geforce 7950GT KO 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $20.00 Mail-in Rebate $260.99

                OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply - Retail $30.00 Mail-in Rebate $149.99

Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 B2L-00047 Black USB Ergonomics Keyboard Mouse Included - OEM $21.99

                GeIL 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model GX21GB6400UDC - Retail $117.99

EVGA 122-CK-NF68-AR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $249.99

                Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6400 - Retail $221.00

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 SP2b w/Upgrade Coupon for Vista - OEM $109.99

                Subtotal: $1,435.90
And the $60 worth of MIR brings that down to $1375.90. That's $1023.10 less than Alienware.

I guess you don't get the massive, over-the-top case Alienware case, but you can find similar ones on Newegg. For my setup, I chose a more modest, basic case.

But the thing is, when you buy it yourself, you can pick and choose from a mulititude of parts; you're not limited just to what Alienware has. So if you were to build it yourself, just give us a budget and I can pick out the parts. I would not get a 680i motherboard or a 700 watt PSu for that system... it's just overkill. A P5Be motherboard and a 500watt PSU would be more than enough.

And ALienware's upgrades are even more overpriced. At newegg, the e6700 processor is $289 more than the e6400, at AW that's a $400 upgrade. The x6800 is $737 more at newegg, but $950 more at AW. One more gigabyte of memory is $115 more at Newegg, but a $300 upgrade at AW. The X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card is $90 at Newegg, but $130 more at AW.

There are times when pre-built computers offer a better deal than building it yourself, but high-end gaming machines certainly do not apply.

Listen to what Knightwhosaysni has posted. Everything he has posted is true and you should consider it before purshasing the computer. After you build the computer, you will be happy that you did so.
