i find the onboard sound i have is brillant so i have been iffy about spending money on a card that might not make much of a difference

                    Re: just ordered.........

still depends on your processor and chipset. onboard will ALWAYS eat into CPU cycles, so in a cpu-intensive application (i.e. a game that utilizes the cpu more than bf2) onboard sound can impair performance.

the important caveat to that is that now that we have fast dual-core cpu's, the "eating into your cpu cycles to render sound" factor is very much mitigated.

having said that, i KNOW that my audigy 2zs gives better audio quality than my onboard sound, and that by doing the hardware mixing on the card, it relieves my p4 3.0E of doing that while coordinating the actions of sound, video, memory, and disk utilization.

Sound card will always be better than onboard. I was amazed at the sound difference when i got my X-Fi sound card. I hear things ive never heard before and can hear the location of an enemy before i can see them.
I can 'nearly' play with my eyes shut

One thing to consider with a game like BF2 it was written to use EAX 4 and 5, and at best your onboard only supports EAX 2.

Another thing is that the game uses OpenAL which at the moment as far as I know only Creative cards support fully (and in hardware).

You also don't say which chip you have for onboard sound (RealTek, etc) but if it is anything like the ALC850 on my board, then either your ears are broken or your speakers/headphones are. It sounds like complete crap compared to my Audigy.

                              can't beat dedicated hardware mixing.

onboard is getting better, though. for folks on any sort of budget--these improvements make for a powerful argument for "getting by" with onboard sound and sinking that $100-$150 you'd otherwise spend on an x-fi into a better gpu/cpu/mobo. video games are still MOSTLY visual experiences, and another $100 goes along way toward making those visuals look better/run faster.

having said that, my audigy 2 zs is freakin' great man.
