Why waste your money on something that will barely help your performance when you would see far more improvement with 2Gb of ram. Wrong move IMO.

was never about the bf2 fps. was migrating components to a new case, was going to format anyway, and decided to modernize the current hdd's, which are starting to show signs of their age. i had ~$250, needed a new PSU anyway, and wanted to tinker. for $55 ea, striping a couple of nice, fast, quiet drives in a new case with a new PSU gets me my tinkering fix, gets my eide nest of cables down, and now i've got all the stuff i need for an $850-$900 c2d chip+ddr2 ram+pci-e card+mobo build with no compromises, as soon as the e6420's come out.

obviously you ARE right about the ram, 2gb would be nice, but i've only got two slots on my mobo, meaning i'd have to ebay the first gig (2x512mb) to get a second. that would have eaten up $150 IF i got $30-$40 for my "A-DATA" value ram on ebay. and, even then, i'd still have been left with 2gb of ddr (or the slowest ddr2 made) that wouldn't recycle very well in a c2d system. beyond that, folks on newegg have reported having trouble with running 2gb (either ddr/ddr2) in an ecs p4m800pro.

worst case scenario with the raid0 experiment: i spent $100 on too many hard drives, and possibly end up frustrated when my array doesn't work properly, and have to run them as independent drives.

worst case scenario with 2gb ram: i'd spend $180-200 on a 2gig ddr 400mhz or 533mhz ddr2 kit, get $30-40 back for my current gig, and wish i had a little faster ram this summer when i rebuild.

Without reading the whole thread (im lazy lol) i dont see any reason to go RAID0. It is debaitable to say the least if it has any improvement on your system alone, never mind BF2.
Im running on a fast 80G SATA2 drive (lots more drives for storage) and with SATA2 and 2GB ram i am first in any server i go into.
Keeping your system clean, optimized and above all defragged means alot more if you ask me.
I use a third party defrag proggy, which puts my system (XP) and BF2 to the outer of the drive (fastest part of your drive is the outer edge).
          Windows defrag sucks btw......
A little maintanence goes a long way..... much more than RAID.
          Just MHO

shorter post for you: i wanted to get my hands on raid at home before i proposed a JBOD for my department to share resources at work, and I'm going to miss $100 on 2 nice hd's for the next three years far less than i'd miss $200 on slow ram for the next six months.

thanks for the advice though: 2 gigs > 1 gig. real number line and all. :)

Nice contadiction...... home raid before work lol..
Google is your friend... RAID is unjustified and not worthy!
There are more cons than pros, 1 h/d goes, it all goes.
Please explain the positives of RAID?

not quite true, raid0 yes u will loose everything if something goes on one drive but raid1 is a security config where u have 2 hard drives doing excatly the same so if one drive fails you still have the other as a back-up ... and yes i know raid1 is not being concidered just wanted to say a point

very cute. i don't do ANY research AT ALL before i buy tech products. err, wait...actually, i think i did.

home before work? for $100 on a couple of nice hd's, i'd rather scratch my head and look like an a$$ in private first, then be a little more authoritative and knowledgeable at work. perhaps there are merits to being uninformed at work, but i'd have to rely on your anecdotal evidence to support that.

raid0--interesting and cheap, quiet, fast hd's going into a new system this summer.

2gb ddr400/ddr2 533--expensive, six-eight month lifespan in my house when migrate again this summer.

i think if chasing the next two fps justifies (whatever) the cost to you, you should do that. definitely.

for $100, two nice hd's aren't a bad deal. if i learn a little about running an array, woohoot:

                        gravy.

best thing ive found with raid0 is the hard drive space ... 500gb hard drive WOOP

I have about 700GB storage via External USB2 drives....
I keep my main drive (SATA2) CLEAN as a whistle

yeah. there are advantages and (as night would have me *discover*) disadvantages. the technology is interesting and practical, and as long as i don't store the only copy of my dissertation on a RAID0 array, reliability is as much an issue as running one or two drives independently.

Dont get me wrong i was all for it a while back! BUT i discovered it is NOT worth the hassle.
There are NO benefits from it (i challange you to give me 'one' GOOD benefit)
The NEGS way outway the PRO's at the moment! Sorry to burst your bubble but RAID is like an extreme beta of Vista..

Infact i am so confident, i challange you to join me in a server, we will squad up, and when a new map loads i bet i am there first??
                                You up for it?

First one to type...... cheaters!!! wins lol joke j/k lol

To answer the origional question....... Choose any h/d for RAID0......
None will matter, its a bum deal!!!! :p
