Does a router + switch combo cause high latency?

I currently have a PPPoE broadband connection, which I have had hooked directly to my PC. I have a couple of other PCs that I now want to hook up to the internet. I was planning on buying a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Access Point router (I won't be using the wireless option though) plugged into an 8 port switch.

Will this noticeably increase the no. of ms ping rate in Battlefield 2? Thanks for any info.

just get a router switch combo. Don't mix and match hardware if you can avoid it. Read gaming reviews on routers for recommendations on those that like games and those that hate em. Linksys is usually good but has had a couple of questionable firmware installations in the past.

Because the number of PCs in my house and an adjoined flat are increasing, I've kind of got no choice but to have a router connected to a larger switch. :-(

On average though, I'm not likely to notice a degraded ping rate? It sort of hovers around 17ms to 21ms on local servers at the moment, what figures am I likely to have after introducing a router and a switch?

Since not many do this, and every situation is different, there is no real guess to give you. I don't think it will make much of a difference. keep the name brands the same if possible.

Your actual crap will happen when everyone is online or someone decides to start bit torrenting. Then your gaming days are over..... unless..... the switch developes very specific connection issues

it shouldnt change it by much but maybe see if you can get your own connection onto one of the routers wired ports and everyone else on the switch, at least that cuts out one hop for you

and you could always use the routers qos for bf2

Thanks for the info. I've got my router and switch set up now, with my PC hooked into the switch and haven't noticed any further increase in ping rates.

well LAn is so quick doing that you wouldnt notice the slightest slow down!

I updated the firmware on the WRT54GL router to DD-WRT, replacing the stock linksys firmware. I am now getting "error reading from server" errors at the end of a round. What could be causing this? Do I need to manually set static IP addresses to my PCs, and open ports?

I don't know about that router, but you shouldn't really have to do that at all.

But I'd say do give each computer a static IP, it helps a lot when configuring them. I'm playing BF2, CSS and all sorts of games just fine without opening a single port.

I've also noticed that when running bittorrent (Azureus), it says on the status bar "Firewalled" and "DHT Firewalled". I've got the Windows XP firewall enabled on the LAN connection, and the SPI firewall is enabled on the router's firmware. Here's a screenshot I took of the current firewall settings on the router:




Edit: Looks like I've fixed it by manually opening ports in DD-WRT.
