    Dedicated video card power supply unit?



    At $53 dollars, looks like a great way to power a high-end gpu in tandem with a mediocre PSU (i.e., hp/dell/gateway...) pushing power to the rest of the system. Like one of the reviewers said, beats the heck out of dropping $100-150 on a decent replacement PSU.

    sorry id rather spend £60 on a new PSU than that, means more stuff in my case.

    maybe just me being picky!

      yeah--i wouldn't even consider one for a brand new build. there have been a lot of folks on the boards lately that are upgrading (trying to upgrade) their factory boxes with underpowered psu's with high-end gpu's.

      i'm considering doing a mini-build--migrating my current pc3200 and x800xt (agp) into a C2D mobo/processor system, and then later buying a better mobo and leaving agp and ddr behind for good in favor of pci-e and ddr2. grabbing one of these might open some options with the $100 I'd save on an acceptably quiet/powerful psu.

      Plus (depending on the build quality) it will migrate just fine for the foreseeable future.

        I would not recommend that set up. It would not be the best arrangement for power management and stability. Do yourself a favor and buy the right size PSU to run your system with your graphics card and all the peripherials especially if they are powered through your USB ports.

            As far as stability goes, I'm almost certain I would have woken up during physics 101 if the professor had suggested that the laws of the universe would allow a gpu to be able to discriminate between electrons flowing from the "outboard" (gpu) psu from electrons flowing from the "inboard" (main) one.

            There are some potential heat issues I hadn't considered (yet), but offloading a gpu's power onto a dedicated box frees up those watts to push another 120mm cooling fan (if three wasn't enough :) ).

            It isn't a perfect solution--for a total rebuild a modular >550W psu with one giant, quiet cooling fan would be the way I'd go. Outboarding the gpu does, however, offer a straightforward (and relatively inexpensive) way to add an x1950xt or a 7950gt to a factory box, or to upgrade an existing pc in smaller increments than a total redux.
