Need Help On computer Build.

Hey, I am going to build a computer and need some help. I have already picked out most of the pieces and I want to know if I could get better pieces for around the same price. I also need help on choosing a sound card and processor and making sure everything works together.

Pieces are...
Mother Board
Memory
Video Card
Power Supply

With this processor I have a few questions...
-Is it bad that I don’t get Dual Core with this?
-What is the relevance with the cores and the locations?
-This should be compatible with my mother board because they are Athlon 64 FX but what is with the socket type on them?

With the soundcard, I want something above average but not too expensive. I don’t know anything on this piece so I need help with it.

Also, what do I need to but usb and audo ports in the front of my computer.

Hi,

Socket 939 is dead. You should buy an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. they are cheaper yet perform a lot better plus can be overclocked very far. Any Intel Core Duo chip is very good, it just doesnt make sense to buy AMD at the moment unless you are building a budget machine.

Secondly, the mobo. By the looks of things, you are willing to spend about £80 ($150 ). A budget board is the Abit AB9 Pro which is very good, but slightly more expensive but a lot better is the Asus P5B deluxe/DH/Wifi.

Memory is nice

PSU is very nice, if not a bit of an overkill...

Video card, basically you should, if possible, try and get a new DX10 card E.g. Nvidia 8 series or ATI R series (Due for release in Jan). Cos by next year you will probably need a DX10 card so spend a bit extra now if you can. The 8800 GTS/GT are good value.

Edit: A good value sound card is the bog standard Creative X-Fi. And if you cant quite stretch that far, then just go for something like a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 off ebay

You put a S939 CPU with an AM2 mobo. S939 is dead, it would be wise to get a core 2 duo. An E6600 would be a better choice.

However, don't poo poo the E6300 Core 2 Duo. Those things are very good for such a low price and overclock like hell!

I say "poo poo" the E6300.

the e6300 only has 2mb of L2 cache, whereas the e6600 has 4 mb.

First off, what's your budget and secondly are you wanting something JUST to play bf2 or with other games? bf2 engine does NOT use dual core and dx10 will be coming out soon....imho, I'd wait.

The E6600 is about £100 more expensive than the E6300 which is still a brilliant chip. 2mb of cache is good, 4mb is just extreme.

Its ok for those of us who have money trees to harvest, but for people on a budget i would still suggest the E6300 or E6400

but it does help, bf2 runs smooth as the 2 cores run together to share the load. my mates FX-55 does about 60fps but let me E6600 play BF2 ill hit 100fps. Same happens on CSS he does about 80fps ill easily hit 150fps. Dual core is the way to go even if its not supported as it frees up alot of system resources.

And im not saying the e6300 is bad its just that 2mb cache hold it back, i beleave there going to release a 4mb version. But the E6600 i recon is the best all rounder and with an evga 680i motherboard its a leathal combination!

You can overclock a 6300 on air to almost 6800 speeds and only a few percent lower. Youd be mad not to consider one for 90 quid less than a 6600.

Ok my comp is nearly done. I will go with the mother board and the processor sugjested by Alex. With he DX10 issue, I have been told that DX9 cards will be able to support DX10, is this true?

I need a new case also, I am going buy a cheap case now but I need to know if this case is a p.o.s. or if its just a good deal.

For now, but when it happens, we will see. You can only hope for future compatibility and never depend on it.

If you don't have a size requirement, I always like roomy. Easier to work in. Most cases here in the states already come with power supplies though.

The case that has the ports (and the compatible wiring to your motherboard connectors) for these. USB is usually no issue. Sound (mic and headset) can give you issues. Some motherboard sound doesn't support stereo out the front even though it does out the back. Stick with a mic and headset that just have long cables or get some cable extenders (very cheap) and you won't have to worry about the additional wiring nor case ports.

My friend had the exact same case, and it scremed "TACKY" to me. I have the Antec Nine Hundred which has the blue neon light which seems to be what is appealing it to you.

Its a bit more expensive but it is quality.

No, 2mb cache is bad, 4mb of cache is good. You got a lot better, more stable overclocking with more cache.
