new memory

well i want some new memory and i noticed my mobo supports up to ddr2 800 while its running ddr2 667,so i was thinking as a Christmas gift for em i get ym self more memory and better memory so could you guys make some recommendations?other specs in sig.

oh and when i install it i just lock it in there right?

If you have SATA capabilities but not a SATA hard drive, I'd go with one of the new 7600 or even 10,000 RMP ones. Serious improvements in speed over the old IDE.

And yes, the memory snaps right in there. You want it all to be the same so if you are adding memory and keeping the old stuff, make it the same speed. if you are replacing it all, then go for the 800.

To Simon, Why are you talking about hard drives?

To the OP, unless your planning on overclocking your CPU, there will be no point in going from DDR2 667 to DDR2 800. It would be better to just buy more of your current RAM.

Wait dont you have PC2 4200? That's DDR2 533.

If you do have DDR2 667, the increase would be 5-8% and is not enough to warrant the price.

I should have spelled it out better. My recommendation is that if you want speed, don't sweat the memory. You are close enough to fine and you'll be tossing good money after bad for what may turn out not to be a visual increase. If you do something like switch from IDE to SATA (specs were missing from sig on this) then you will see a major difference in load and verification times and possibly better in game operations where you had stuttering before perhaps.

Upgrading his RAM to 2gb will make a much bigger improvement over getting a new raptor drive.

I've had it all. 1GB up to 2GB didn't do much for me.

When I switched from IDE to SATA, My load time in general decreased by 30 to 45 seconds at least. I also never have lag stuttering problems on Gator which many report to be their sole unplayable map. I'm not saying don't get memory, but between the two, my money is on the hard drive being a speed up.

still, best bang for the buck would be getting two $72 samsung (my personal preference) 250gb sata's and striping them for 500gb of terrifically fast performance. if your dad is Donald Trump, then a single 10,000rpm hd that holds 34-120 gigs may do just fine, with a 500gb data drive thrown in for spare.

but again, as cloaker put it...why are we talking about hd's?

upgrading by a few hundred mhz in memory=net zero effect unless you're going for 3dMark bragging rights. Visually, no difference, as has been pointed out before. another gigabyte of memory, however, might have some appreciable impact.
