Okay, my buddy is putting his first system together. He has an Asus AMD chipset MOBO and a 420 watt PSU. The pinout on the MOBO is 24 pins and the pinout on the PSU has only 20 pins. Does this matter? Will the PSU still be compatibile with the MOBO? Thanx.

Sidenote: I don't have all the relevant specs such as the chipset #, PSU brand, etc. at the moment.

Well, he should get a dif PSU. Most PSU's now should have the 20+4 pinout. Also he should go with a better PSU if he wants to upgrade in the future.

Yeah, but it also depends ALOT on the chipset; I originally used an adaptor to make my 20-pin PSU work with my 24-pin mobo. The adaptor was causing some cabling problems, and the manual said the 4-pin might not be necessary (although some functions might be disabled), so now I'm just leaving the 4 pins on the MOBO open. I haven't noticed any diff--but you really need to be sure that your MOBO is compatible with a 20-pin plug.

Then again, trial and *sparkle, fizzzz, pop* error provides spice in life.
