Anyone using Dell 3007WFP 30" LCD monitor?

If so, how does it work for BF2?

I see one for less than $1,100 and that seems like a steal, but I don't wanna bother if it's ghosting all over the place.

    thanks.................

    - 30" Widescreen

    - The only 4 mega pixels monitor that shows true resolution of mega pixel pixel photos
    - Higher definition than HD Television to meet the most stringent video needs
    - 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA) Optimum Resolution (Dual Link capable DVI-D graphics card required)
    - 16.7 Million Colours
    - 700:1 Contrast Ratio
    - 14ms Response Time (11ms Grey-TO-Grey)
    - 400 cd/m2 Brightness
    - One DVI-D Input with HDCP support
    - Height adjustable stand (100mm travel)
    - VESA mounting compatible / Security slot : Yes (100mm) / Yes
    - Integrated powered USB 2.0 hub : 4 downstream / 1 upstream ports
    - Integrated powered 9-in-2 Card Reader: Compact Flash 1&2, Secure Digital, MMC, Smart Media and Microdrive
    - Warranty : 4 year next business day exchange supplied by Manufacturer (Call DELL on 0870 9080800 and have the work number from the original packaging handy)
    - Before purchasing this product make sure you have a compatible graphics card that supports Dual Link DVI / DVI-D such cards are the ATI X1300/X1600/X1800/X1900 series and NVIDIA 7800 series graphics cards.
    - This product is not compatible with AGP cards
the important part is the 14ms response time - SLOW!

you can get a 4ms 20-22inch which will be great for gaming.

I'm already using a 20" Sony CRT. It's OK, but I want bigger, MUCH bigger.

I agree about the 14ms response time seeming slow. However, here's a review of the Dell 3007WFP and the guy says it's terrific for gaming:

Re: Anyone using Dell 3007WFP 30" LCD monitor?

I have no issue with it for gaming, trying to run a game at its native res is a different story! I think you'd have to be looking dual or quad 8800's to stand a chance. I run BF2 at 1600x900 on it, doesnt look bad.
The monitor also requires you card to be dual link dvi compatable, this is not the same as having dual dvi outputs.

It is a vast screen area, truely vast, which is nice but remember that it doesnt simply slot in as a replacement for a smaller screen, its big and i had to adjust how far back i sat to be comfortable looking at it which wasnt something i thought about having to do.
Looking at pictures on the screen is amazing, you can start to understand why those mega pixel numbers on cameras are important. Also browsing or researching is so easy, no need to hide one window to use another.

Would i buy another.... nope. The resolution is impracticly big for gaming without spending a lot of money on hardware to feed its appetite. You cant split the screen so whilst it is impressive it isnt as useful as dual monitors. It also has a brightness button that a single touch of can result in burning your face of!

Thanks for comments. I'm using a brand new nVidia 7850GT vid card, with 2gb of ram. I can run BF2 at 2048 x 1536 with no problem (medium settings), so the res of the 3007WFP shouldn't be too big a deal.

Interesting about the screen being too big, and having to adjust distance. I had thought about that, but figured it would just be better to be able to see things in more detail.

            Good feedback.................

Hey samarlian, can you take a ruler and measure the actual screen dimensions of your Dell 24"? I want to compare that to my current screen.............

            gracias

Re: Anyone using Dell 3007WFP 30" LCD monitor?

M8 from the bottom right hand corner to the top left hand corner is 24"
the 24" and 30" display the same full picture as where a 20" and below cut the sides off ie zoomed in, this has agreat advantage when playing BF2 as you can see the enemy to the side of you quicker than somebody with a normal monitor

Do not waste your money on a 30" the 24" has a better response time and is brighter and clearer check the contrast ratio below thee 30" its just a gimic for people to have bigger and better.

I looked at both along side each other and decided on the 24" it was far better and will save you a small fortune, if you look in the right place you will get one for about £590 check link below

Re: Anyone using Dell 3007WFP 30" LCD monitor?

Funny you bring this monitor up. We were talking about gaming on Widescreens in the office yesterday. A co-worker just bought the Benq 20" WLCD. Newegg had a deal for $200 last week. Benq might have the sharpest LCD out there right now, surpassing the Dell LCDs for the moment (they always catch up).

At any rate, this guy that bought this often does a lot of the evalutations for future technologies for my company (tests stuff that HP or Dell will be releasing in several months, but you can't buy on the market and if you can, it would be three times the cost).

At anyrate, he was disappointed to find that the WLCD was not programmed with enough features to support widescreening in games. It was real surprising. It did a kinda of stretch effect that ended up looking like a fish-lense. Kinda like when you go to a bar/resturant and they have not calibrated their wide screen, so words are stretched on the sides but in the center they look fine.

Dell normally will keep on top of these kinds of problems. I used to work for Dell and I am going over to party this weekend at a VP of Enterprise Sales. So, I am kinda familar with them. So keep this nugget in mind if you do go with them.

They have a 30 day, money back, no questions asked option. So, if you get it, test it with Half-life and make sure that you have the full FOV and not some stretched 4:3 or compressed 16:10. Send the ****er back on the spot. Games coming out of the next two years are really going to start embracing that widescreen feature, even if DiCE missed the boat. Crysis, QuakeWars, Xbox, PS3...movies.

Speaking of movies. BenQ's awesome 24"WLCD has an HDMI input. That can be important in coming years. But to each his own.

Well, you guys really got me thinking now. I was kinda sold on the 30", but 24" sounds more suited to desktop and BF2.

In a post above samarlian seems to indicate that BF2 is set up for wide screen?

When using a wide-screen monitor for BF2, is the scene simply stretched to fill the monitor, or do you actually get a wider view area?

Seems like a wider view area would give you a little advantage.

BF2 only supports 1600x1200 rez but you can set up your pc to play BF2 in widescreen instructions below

when you have installed BF2 right click on the bf2 short cut and change fullscreen 1 to widescreen 1 and the type in after it +szx 1920 +szy 1200 or what ever rez you want

You will always see more with a widescreen monitor and a higher rez than somebody using a standard 15" or 17" monitor.

Its like a photograph you take a standrad photo and a panaramic photo from the same camera both pictures show the same picture from bottom to top but horizontaly on the panaramic picture you have both sides extended thats the whole point of widescreen.

Samarlian, I understand what you are saying, but it sounds like the screen is simply stretched, or perhaps top and bottom are reduced.

When using your example (camera using standard vs panoramic), the tops and bottom of the pic are simply cut off. The actual width of the viewed image is still the same. You get a panoramic-looking pic, but it's not actually wider (unless you have special camera).

Can you take a screenshot in BF2? Take it somewhere that's easy to duplicate. Then, I'll take a screenshot on mine, from the same spot as you. Then we'll compare screenshots. I'm real curious to see if you actually have more (or maybe less) viewing area..........

                            thanks
