need suggestions

ive been out of the computer game for awhile now and it seems like everysingle thing that was the greatest back then is now obsolete
so im looking for some suggestions cause i want to build a new computer
there are a few things i know i want
eVGA 8800GTS
atleast 250gb HD
2gb of ram ( no more than 250-275$)
dvd burner
500-700 watt psu

besides that i dont even know what the newer processors are
id also like to have a nice sound card not to expensive though
and i want a trusted mobo thats not gonna fail on me the 2nd day
so if someone could create a list for me from newegg for a complete setup that would be great
it will be mostly used for gaming, surfing the web and music

First off, nice case. I dont have it, never seen it in person, but the pics make it look very nice.
Video card, yes the 8800GTX is top dog right now, so if you have the money by all means.

HD, what i would do if i was you, and if you are able to spare the money, is get one 150GB Raptor, and i guess another HD for storage pourpose of your choice size, i have a 250 for storage, and a 150 raptor for main stuff.
Good on the ram. That should hold out for some time.

Dvd burners, you can find the ones with lighscribe feature now days, and be cheap too.
PSU go as high as you can afford, but also get a good brand one, like Antec, Enermax, search for them, i am not too sure for PSU.

The newer CPU, and currently the best are the Intels Core 2 Duo, dual core, and good for everthing. Read review here to see what i am talking about.

Sound wise, the Creative Xfi cards seen to probide the best sound quality, but some mobo's come with desent onboard sound proccesors.

Now mobos, there's alot to pick from, and now the Nvidia chipset 680 just came out for the new intel chips, but there's not many available. So if you want that i would wait a bit, till all makers have theirs out and you can take yoru pick. If should not be more than a month.

^ What he said. Especially this ^ part. Some of the current MOBO's have some issues. Core 2 duo has only been out for a few months; I always like to let the technology mature just a little before plopping down a thousand dollars or more.

But that's me, and I tend to be a little bit of a cheapskate. :)

i love my GIGABYTE 3D AURORA i have the one wit the screen on the side not the window helps with airflow and it traps a lot of dust ull be suprised.

probably gonna get this ram
would yall suggest it?
it has cas latency of 5, isnt that really high for that pricey of ram or am i confused and 5 is actually good?
also since ive decided to spend 300 on ram is the best i can get for the money?
i know ram is a hit or miss component in comps and i want to get it right

gonna stick with the intel core 2 duo e6600 conroe and the evga 680i
seems like all the reviews for it are praise and joy
and instead of my orginal plan of not ocing my processor i found out that nvidia has a tut on how to oc especially for the 680i (ill probably oc to about 3.0)

i realized i could get the 680i without overspending so i might as well right?

what are the features you would look for?
like whats better cas latency 2,3,4, or 5 and for timings what should i look for?

also since ive really liked the way my amd has performed ive been thinking of just getting a AMD X2 5000+ 2.6ghz
would there be a big performance diffrence from the core 2 to the 5000?
im not gonna be doing any ocing for the processor btw

Generally, the lower the latency the better the performance. Since you aren't going to oc, there isn't any point in getting expensive ram, all you really need is this:

As for the mobo, it depends on whether you wanna go sli or not. If not, the gigabyte is the better value, and since the 680i is really only for overclockers or people who are going to go sli you should pick up the gigabyte. If you really want to spend some money on a board in the 680i class, the only real other choice is this one:

Intel 975 chipset, crossfire compatible, and all around a great board (I should know, I have one :p).
For the proc, the core 2 will blow the 5000+ right outta the water, the performance difference will be that large.

thanks alot for all the suggestions but i think ill just end up going with teh evga 680i just so if i decide to get another 8800 i would have that option (if im ever that crazy ) and ive been thinking about ocing the processor so i think itd be a good choice

for ram i really havent decided yet but ill take that g.skill into consideration
i edited my post from earlier and i think that 300$ corsair xms ram would be nice that i posted
but idk i think thats gonna be the component im gonna keep searching around for
