Sharing the internet

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me set up two computers to share the internet? I'm absolutelly clueless as to what to do and what I need, well, I do know I need a network adapter (is that correct?) and cables. But what kind, etc I don't know.

I have two laptops. I use internet with one, and now I'd like to share the internet connection with the two laptops. I am not looking or a wirless connection, just normal, with cables.

If someone could 'bullet point' me what to do? What to buy? What steps to take, withought geting too complicated? :)

If your modem has an ethernet connection then this would do the trick.

If not , you could replace your modem with this

Both options come with excellent instructions on how to set them up and you'll be up and running within a matter of minutes. An alternative would be to plump for a wireless router which will also have wired ports should you wish to go wireless in the future.

I don't think it has an ethernet connection, it's just a normal broadband modem :)

So the Linksys router is what I need, this router will NOT replace my modem, right? I need to connect the router to my broadband modem, correct? :)

Also, would I need to have the main machine on all the time for the other machine to be able to use the internet or can I switch off the main machine and the router will let the other machine connect to the internet?

No, you just set DHCP in either the modem settings or on the Router.

This is what it explained on my Modem for DHCP..

The SURFboard cable modem can be used as a gateway to the Internet by a maximum of 32 users on a Local Area Network (LAN). When the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet, users on the LAN can be dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem DHCP Server. These addresses are assigned from an address pool which begins with 192.168.100.109 and ends with 192.168.100.142. Statically assigned IP addresses for other devices on the LAN should be chosen from outside of this range

Sir. {RF}TFS: I read this page: http://www.jerrykindall.com/2005/06/...42_is_crap.asp on the linksys touter, it says it has problems with static IP's? And I'm using stastic IP.

Also, I'm assuming I need to look at the speed of the router? The speed it can handle?

I have a D-link right now, and it seems decent, so I bet http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127013 would be a good choice. It's capable of 100Mbps, which is a lot faster than any residential broadband connection I know of. Mine's like 4Mbps.

Linksys Broadband Etherfast Cable/DSL Firewall Router With 4-port Switch Reason I'm asking because of the word ETHERFAST and Cable/DSL - is it OK to use with ADSL connection?

I just want to make sure before I buy it so don't buy something that I can't use.

Also, I have static IP will it work with this?

EDIT: ok I'm a little confused now, I have asked another friend of mine and he said that those routers will not work in the UK with my ADSL connection?

I have no idea why he thinks the linksys wont work in the UK, its a perfectly good dsl router

He said that it's a 'DSL' router and that I need 'ADSL' because I have ADSL broadband connection,

Or get a crossover ethernet cable and plug them both in. That was how I did it before i got a router. Cable was $6.

Sorry, didn't realize you were in the UK.

But if your modem has an ethernet output, then that Linksys router ought to work fine as far as I know...

Thought i'd use this thread rather than start a new one.

We are using a 2/3mb Connection here & it does'nt seem enough even when running two computers off it at the same time it just lags & skips in BF2.

Is my router crap at sharing the connection we have? or is there something I can do maybe router setup to make it better at sharing?

It's almost unplayable.

what kind of connection do you have? Most likely you just have a DSL modem with an ethernet line running out of it to your computer. Get a home router at your local electronics store, prob only cost 30 bucks or so. (a LINKSYS or something) DHCP will most probably be already enabled. It'll probably just be plug and play. After you read the instructions a little bit you'll probably be able to set up some port forwarding so when you play bf2 behind the router is works a little better. You also could probably get a wireless router considering you have laptops, if you just had desktops i wouldn't suggest this. Seeing as wandering to the couch and the kitchen table or outside on the patio is a nice thing to do with a laptop while your on the net. Given that your laptops already are wirelessly capable... if not then you will spend more money updating the laptops. But todays 802.11g and faster wireless connections are actually quite good. I only have 802.11b at my house, and for my laptop it seems to be enough.

you could open up the router a bit more to your side so the connection is a little bit mroe strait through. Go on google and check out the port forwarding for the game and your router, OR go into the router via the web based utility and set your current rig's IP as the DMZ computer. I bet it won't skip so much anymore.

If you want to save money, use ICS. Otherwise, use a router.

Just hook join together the laptops via a 2nd ethernet cable, in "Network Connections", select the two connections and click "Bridge Connections" (right click context menu) and DHCP should sort it all out.
