Looking for the cheapest BF2 compatible laptop

Hey all,

I have been playing BF2 on my desktop which is running:

Celeron D 2.4Ghz
1G Corsair Value Ram
Sapphire 9600Pro card
19" Samsung CRT

I am able to run the game on med settings and I am happy with the results.

I travel a lot and cannot play the game on my dell B130. I am tempted to upgrade my laptop to one that will play BF2 with similar success. I really do not want to spend more than 1000$ Are there any laptops on the market today (OCT '06) that will play this game for that price? brand is not important (dell, newegg(msi/acer/asus), alienware, etc)

so it looks like the x1600 card with 128m dedicated is the way to go for that pricepoint. how does the x1400 hyper compare? i think the x1400 has 128 dedicated and 128 shared for a total of 256. which is better, acer with x1600 or dell with x1400 with all the same other specs?

Forget the dell the Acer wont come with a bunch of crap dell software & shared memory will take away from the 1 gig and you need all that and more to run the game.

The x1400 is no comparison. Its a lesser GPU (graphics processor), so it simply can't do as much, no matter how much RAM you throw at it. With 128MB dedicated and 128MB shared, I'd be willing to bet it would be about 50% worse than the X1600. Its the graphics processor you want to be looking at, NOT the amount of RAM it has.

For a laptop, that seems like a very reasonable price for its components. Should play very smoothly on all high at the monitor's native resolution just fine. Which I think is 1440x900. But I wouldn't expect to get that much playing time on a bettery :)

i never use my current laptop (B130) without AC unless i am at the airport and there i still try to find an outlet. i dont really care about the battery options...


on another note, what are the pros/cons of the ultrasharp truelife lcd option?

i am also wondering how much cheaper this laptop or any laptop will be come december....

The Ultrasharp option has a much, much higher resoution than 1440x900, it's 1920x1200. So it's probably extremely sharp, considering it's only a 17 inch monitor. In the desktop world, 1920x1200 is reserved for 24" monitors, not 17" ones. But the 7900gs is not going to be able to handle that in 3D games, and text is going to be extremely small in 2D applications, so I think the 1440x900 would be a better choice.

what is the difference between the 7900gs and the 7600 cards? is it safe to assume the higher number is better?

saw a hp dv9000t with mostly same options but the 7600 card and the price is around 1400, which is almost $300 cheaper overall.....

any comments???????

7900 > 7600

I would say spend the 300 bucks and get the better video card

Actually, I'm running my laptop with a 7900GS and can easily play on all high in any game at 1920x1200.

which screen and ram do you have?
