I think the question is if they can afford to.

First off, they aquired ATi, so you can hardly call that lying down, and secondly of course AMD is going to fight back. They being a large firm, aim to make money, in order to make money they need to have a product that is more desirable than the competition, in order to do that they must continue to develope new hardware. So yes, they will definately stand up and knock Intel down.

but when? with the speed Intel has at popping out multi-core processors, they could potentially have an 8core processor out end of next year (makes you wonder when it becomes enough)

Intel pledges 80 cores in five years

CEO Paul Otellini held up a silicon wafer with the prototype chips before several thousand attendees at the Intel Developer Forum here Tuesday. The chips are capable of exchanging data at a terabyte a second, Otellini said during a keynote speech. The company hopes to have these chips ready for commercial production within a five-year window.

I just bought a Core 2 Duo, and it should be fine for my needs. There is no way that I am going to be needing an 4 core processor.

1rst OPTERONS are very very powerfull
                        and
2nd why do you care what color is you CPU (green or blue). What really matters is the money/performance criteria.

First off none of you need quad core and none of you will be able to afford them. AMD is doing the sensible thing right now, there isnt a need for quad core, there isnt a need for 80 core. You should also remember quad core is aimed at professionals and most professionals already use Intel because of there durability. AMD will hit back when they feel like it, and im sure there working right now with ATi on something.
