I've had the 6800 and it ran smoothly, I ran everything on high (except for AA which I kept off and and lighting + gemotry which were on medium). I was also able to run Oblivion without any problems (Not on high, but enough not to make it look horrible).

The only problem I had with the 6800 is that after a while it overheats and will cause it to restart... Another is that it got so loud. I would definatly go and get the 7800gs and I can run everything on high! Don't expect to play on 64 man servers either!

It's amazing how people's experiences can differ with similar hardware.
With BF2 1.4 and the 91.47 Nvidia drivers, my Albatron 6800GT AGP@410/1100 with an NV Silencer Rev. 5 cooler, runs everything on high, 1280x1024@72hz, FSAAx2 and TAA multisampling. 40-100fps on 64 player servers, totally smooth gameplay and no stuttering or choppiness.

To the OP, the 6800GT is a great card if you can get hold of one very cheap, but in your minimum stated budget range, the best current generation Nvidia card is probably the 7600GS. Look it up on Google, check out some reviews and benchmarks. It should run BF2 on medium\high settings with 1.5-2GB RAM.

6800GT\BF2 1.4\Nvidia 91.47 screen attached... Unfortunately nothing spectacular, I just happened to press PrtScrn by accident..
