an easy question

hi right now i dont have the best mobo in the world, i have a mobo manufactured by gateway but it does have a pcie slot available which i have my x1600 in but do mobos have a limit on how high of a card i could put in there or does only the psu matter? I wanted to put an xfx 7900gs xtreme editon 256mb pcie in, can i put this in without frying my mobo?

amd athlon 64 3400+2.2ghz
1.5gigs of ram
480 watt psu(came with the case )

by the way the mobo is also a nforce 4 ti chipset

Dont see any real reason why not? You might want to update bios before hand

I think you're right on with the assumption of only having enough power to support a larger card. A 480 should be enough to run most basic things (CD-ROM, 2 HDs, GPU). Just if you ever decide to drop in two GPU in SLI mode, you'll need to upgrade the PSU.

If the mobo supports PCIe, then there shouldn't be any limitations.

I have a Antec Neo Trupower 2.0 480w psu and i am running a very high spec rig

1x AMD 4000 overclocked to 2.993
1x Zalmen flower cooling cpu fan
1x ASUS A8N32-SLI-DELUXE
4x 512 Adata ddr500 ram
2x 7900GTX 512 fitted with Zalman VF900 cooling fans
1 x Western digital raptor 74gb
1 x Western digital cavair 160gb
2 x dvd/dvdrw

If you have a decent psu you might get away with, it the above specs on my pc only pulls 390-410 w off my psu.

I think you are way under-powered there for all the components you have. You may be able to run them all without any problems, but you are going to burn out that PSU fairly quickly. You're running your PSU at 85%. (based on the figures, I'm assuming you ran the usage during an idle time as well)
