7900 GT, 2.00 gigs of RAM and.... a PF 3.00 GHZ?

I have the expendable funds available, and I thought adding a little horsepower to my computer wouldn't be a bad idea. I am hesitant though..

I would be getting a 7900 GT (to replace my 6800) and another gig of RAM (for a total of 2 gigs), but, I would still have my crappy old P4 3.00 GHz.

Now, would it be worth it for this upgrade? Or would it be futile because my processor is too weak? Would overclocking be an opetion?

    Thanks.

It all comes down to you honestly. Overclocking could be an option, but you have to have good adequate cooling for the CPU and the Case. As for the upgrade to me 3.0Ghz is enough.

What kind of MB do you have, Intel based i'm guessing? Socket 478 or LGA775?

I'm not positive the exact model, but yes, it's Intel based and I beleive it's socket 478.

Would the 7900 GT still perform adequately with the 3.0 GHz CPU?

Do you know if your motherboard is AGP or PCI-E? And your memory is DDR or DDR2? Because if you plan to upgrade your CPU/Motherboard later, you will need a PCI-E video card and DDR2 memory.

          I know it's PCI-e, and I know the memory it requires (DDR2, I beleive).

I know both the memory and video card will be compatible - I just need to know if it is worth it.

I think it would worth it ( if you don't plan to play at ultra high resolution... ).

              The highest resolution I ever use is 1204 x 1280, only because I have a 19" monitor.

              Thanks for the help.

Now I just need to fix my Windows Media Player problem..

Okay, the RAM that's in my computer is DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHz.

I thought it was PC 3200, but would PC 4200 work in this situation? Or should I use another stick of PC 3200 even if it's a different MHz?

              Thanks.

How can I find out exactly what kind of RAM I have?

I know it's DDR2, but Dell tells me it's 533 MHz, whereas CPUZ tells me 266 MHz (could that be per stick? I have two). Also, how do I find out whether or not I have PC3200 or PC4200?

If I have 3200, can I use 4200? Also, how do I figure out what kind of pin I have?

corsair do memory reporting from thier website, as for the memory it will always run at the lowest speed so adding 4200 with 3200 both sticks will run at 3200.
266 is correct as its doubled by the motherboard to 533 your P4 will run at either 533 or 800.

Okay.. I need some more help.

For the new 7900 GT I'll need a new Power Supply (my current one is insufficient at 350W).

Problem is, Dell won't allow the use of regular ATX power supplies, because they use proprietory hardware. So, I need to buy a Power Supply directly from Dell..

I have considered doing this, though.

                  Buying this: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/...=dellconverter

And then using this power supply: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...913527&CatId=0

Would it be compatible, and is the Power Supply of good quality?

                  Thanks.

Alternatively, you could move your system into another desktop. This is a very well put-together desktop (ya ditch the funky cpu/gpu exhaust, though) for $95 + $18 shipping, and it comes with a 450W psu ($59 by itself). I've got the original sonata, and the 380W psu that came with it is still holding up well 18 months later. Antec is a good quality psu, and this one delivers 32A over the two +12V rails:

If you aren't planning on SLI (don't understand why anyone would), then that would be more than sufficient power.

edit...course, you'd still need that converter, and the antec psu isn't nearly as..glowy. the problem I see is that with 3 80mm fans in the psu, they are sucking significantly on your single 35A +12 v rail. with the antec, there is one less fan, and it has dual +12v rails, so that the CPU has a dedicated rail (usually the second rail or +12v2 at 17A on this one) and the peripherals, gpu, and case fans draw on the second rail (+12v1 at 15A). I know the aspire is rated at 70W more than the antec, but the +12v rail is where you need the power and the antec only falls short of the aspire by 3A over the total +12v.

Thanks, but for the same price I can get the Adapter and the Power Supply, which is probably the most convenient way.

Thanks though - you've helped me a lot - I should be paying you !

Is the Power Supply I linked above of good quality? If not, could somebody search NCIX.com or TigerDirect.ca for a Power Supply about 450 - 500 W for under $100

                      Thanks again/

First of all CPUZ shows you what memory you currently are running.
And for that powersupplie dont look them of the W .

This PSU is far better http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?MfrId=1750&Nav=|c:1079|&Sort=3&Re cs=10

Thanks, but I'd really like the keep the Power Supply at under $100.
