Recomend Motherboard

Hi im on a really tight budget as im off on holiday soon but I need a new motherboard because the one I have is well pretty poor and doesnt really support my graphics card that well.

My cpu is Pentium 4 Northwood 2.40 family cpu. Socket 478, family F.

I dont know what other information you need because this is off cpu-z.

Also the ram bracket slot has fallen off lol and the bracket slot for cpu has also been broken so im just looking for a quick replacement until I get an overhaul when I get back from holiday.

My other specs

x800xl agp aiw
audigy 2 zs
2 gig pc2700 ram
2x80 gig ata hardrives can run ultra 133
600 watt psu

Im from the uk so any products from uk please, I just need to know what motherboard I can get for my cpu thanx :).

Here is a cheap board that support Conroe and older CPUs. It also has AGP and PCIe as well as support for DDR and DDR2. Dump your processor, grab a cheap PentiumD and this $60 board:

My current motherboard is ga-8siml (sis651), it shows as having 512 cach on cpu-z but currently fsb is at 100 so maybe a new motherboard would benefit it?it is also only 4x but al my games run aweful I dont understand why , but ive read that it may be my motherboard. I was also looking at a sempron 2800+ or 3000+ with motherboard to match it both came to £60. Would 2800+ be ok for bf2 and better than my p4 2.4 which i think is a celeron but not too sure.

Here is a cheap board that support Conroe and older CPUs. It also has AGP and PCIe as well as support for DDR and DDR2. Dump your processor, grab a cheap PentiumD and this $60 board:

lol i actually just got that board last week, with a pentium D, 1gb drr2 for £175 :) (the stock fan is noisy as hell untill you go into the bios and set quiet fan @ 45'c)

ooh old motherboard falling apart, id say that was a good reason to get a new one lol

Except that one is for socket 775, the OP needs 478. The one Scinto posted is decent as a budget motherboard.

edit: yay for not reading entire posts :) But I think he's on a budget, so he ought to just get the 478 board. And to the OP what exactly is wrong ith your current motherboard? What model number is it?

I realize this board does not suport his 478 Pentium. My point is that if you are going to spend money on a new board you might as well spend it on one that will future proof you. $60 for this board + $100 for a Pentium D805 and you now have a computer that will run circles around his old 478 chip, use the same RAM and GPU only with 8x AGP now instead of 4x. Better yet you can upgrade to DDR2 and Conroe down the line. Just seems foolish to spend money on a 478 board at this point.

Indeed it would be nice.... but I think he can't spend that much. Really, I think the OP ought to just save his money to get a decent CPU and motherboard. Eh, so yeah, I suppose it wouldn't be in his best interest to get a new 478 mobo...

Hi I might be able to stretch to a socket lga 775 800.

I am looking currently at this cpu
Pentium D 805 Dual Core 64 bit LGA 775 2 x 2.66 GHz 2MB (1 Mb per Core) Cache

Is that a good processor? and will it work with this board?

ASUS P5VDC-X SKT775 VIA PT880 Ultra AGP PCI-E 6channel audio ATX



That board supports my current ram and gpu so when I get ddr2 I can just pop it in also suppports pci-express.

Both in total come to £110 which is the same as a similar board 939 socket with 3500+ so is the D processor much better than a 3500+?

Come to £80 which leaves me cash to get a nice case, I have been looking at benchmarks and the 3000+ beats the D processor in single core tasks so im wondering is a 3200+ a good cpu for gaming as that is all I do plus watch movies and listen to music.

The board you chose to go with your Pentium D 805 does not support Conroe. Intel is the clear leader in performance with Conroe and I suggest you get something like the board I recommended previously so that you have an upgrade path for the future. If you just want to spend as little money as possible now on low end components then the low end AMD chips will beat the low end Intel chips, but you will not be able to upgrade to the next generation in the future without a new motherboard.

If your gonig Intel which you should then go with Conroe. The E6400 is $250 and will easily take out a $800 AMD FX-62 (fastest production amd processor currently) with no problems.
