New Video Card.

I'm planning on buying a new video card I currently have a 7300LE what isn't really good for playing BF2 but I still can play so I was planning on buying a 7600GS. I'm not going to buy something expensive since I am going to buy some new parts when Vista comes out.

The XFX 7600GS I'm planing to buy has:
GPU Speed: 400 MHz
Memory Speed: 800 MHz
Memory Type: DDR2
Memory: 256 MB

( Translated it from Dutch but I think they misspelled some things on the site? )


Currently this is my setup

Intel ViiV 2.8 GHZ:
It's just Intel Pentium D but with a sticker on it.. I'm planning on buying a new one when Vista comes out.

2048MB DUAL CHANNEL DDR2 533MHZ :
I've got 2 Slots left. And the ones in are two of 1024MB..

7300LE:
This is what I'm planning on replacing..

Harddrive:
2X160GB RAID-0 or something it said SATA or something

I guess this will improve my performance (FPS) in BF2 but will this be a lot of will it stay the same and what kind of settings can I expect?

I use this x800xt AIW card, and it's very good--especially if your keen on moving your current setup into a htpc later. performance would probably be on par with (quite possibly better than) a 7600gs.

here is another x800gto to consider, especially due to the price.

i looked, but i couldn't find an independent review on the 7600gs agp cards. If, however, nVidia undercloked them like they did with the agp 7800gs series(which is still a very, very good agp card) then it will run on par with a 6600gt/x800 series. if you're interested, here's what the reviews said regarding the 7800gs:

EDIT 2: in fact, if I'm reading correctly, it might even be better to get a 6800gs, because--although they run at roughly the same speed, it may be possible to unlock the extra pipes if you fancy flashing your bios; here is that link, and some of the posters show "proof" that they've unlocked 4 pipelines in their 6800gs agp's.

Final edit (work calls :) ) make sure you have a PSU that will support a performance card. If you have a dinky 300W no-name then you could roast your hardware in a hurry by plugging in a card that requires a 350W minimum PSU.

The 7600GS Above is 100 Euro's (128.29 USD) so.. That's because I live in the Netherlands were we have Euro as Valuta well I don't know maybe I'll stick to the 7600GS but a big thank you to megawhompertoo for searching

Will the difference between the X800 and 7600GS be big? Since the 7600GS is a bit cheaper?

You're welcome. Difference--I'm actually not sure. The 7600gs is a fairly new card, and not that many people have it, and there aren't that many reviews. Looking at the performance chart (edit: and I don't know if you can trust these people or not):

the x800gto is generally better at medium quality with better resolutions (where you want to be playing with a mid-end gpu) than a 7600gs. Look at the second graph, which features a nice resolution (1280x1024) and 4xAA, which represents what happens when you push the quality a little.

In complex lighting,(HDR) the x800gto appears to suffer--but you wouldn't want to turn on HDR with a 7600gs anyway because plathe framerate would suffer--can you tell the difference between 15fps and 20fps? Would you want to? :p

here, the 7600gs is 10fps behind the x800gto, and 13 fps behind the 6800gs.


The 7600gs suffers compared to the 6800gs and x800gto because it has:

slower memory
slower core
slower type of memory (256mb gddr2 v 256mb gddr3)
restricted memory bandwidth (128-bit v. 256-bit)

and it suffers compared to the x800xt because it has fewer pipelines (12v16)

but, it's all relative to price. the 7600gs is a good card for the price, and you will find it MUCH better than the 7300 you're running now; but you will get better performance in most cases out of an x800gto, but even better performance out of a 6800gs (especially if you can unlock the extra pipes to make it 16) or an x800xt.

As for the settings, I have 1gb ram, a p4 3.0E prescHott, and an x800xt and I play at 1280x1024, medium on everything except view distance to 100 and geometry to high, no dynamic shadows, and 2xAA. my fps usually average 40-60 in a 64server, depending on what is happening around me

i would really reccomend you pay a little more and get a 7600gt much better than a 7600gs

but if youve got a tight budget the x800gto would be a good choice remeber though its the older card and so cant do things such as use shader model 3

holy moly. maybe so. that...um, changes things. i assumed anyone looking at a 7600gs model was using AGP.

if he's using pci-e, then a 7600gt would be super. x850xt would be pretty good, for a little less cash, too.

Well I searched on some sites.. I live in the Netherlands so I can't order trough newegg. But I found a XFX GeForce 7600GT XXX for 159 Euro's that are 204 US Dollars but we got 19% Tax Rates here :|:

Yeah, gotta recomend the 7600GT, unless your really strapped for cash, go for the x1600 512mb. It's almost 7600GT good, and cheaper.

Pff noticed my Monitor is VGA so It won't work on a 7600GT right? Isn't there something like a Adapter :cry:
