Interesting Hardware Problem...

I built a new PC from scratch (which I obvioulsy now regret doing), I installed the game and everything was fine untill the 1.3 patch was released, I downloaded that, installed it and BF2 never worked again.
Ive tried dozens of methods to fix this problem over the past few weeks including countless reinstallments of the patch, the game and even windows itself. The problem is down to my hardware but why did it suddenly stop working when the 1.3 patch was installed? Ive currently uninstalled BF2 and im playing on the 1.22 patch on unranked servers.
Specs:
Some random gigabyte motherboard (with PCI x5 and AGP x1 slots).
AMD Athlon 3000+ (1.81 Ghz)
Ive tried two graphics cards:
- Radeon Saphire 9250 (128 mb, AGP)
- GeForce 5200 (256 mb, AGP)
1.00 GB of RAM.
8x DVD-Rom.
80 GB Hard Drive.
Im not quite sure what to try exactly, all I know is that my hardware is unable to run the 1.3 patch so the upgrade to the game has out-matched my components even though they should be good enough to run the game at a low quality?
When I click on BF2, I get the load-up image followed by a 30 second pause then the "Not Responding" box, with the Dont Send/Send error report options. Im hoping that someone her has expieriences this problem or knows someone that has so they are able to help me as much as they can.
I appreciate all & any usefull information/help.
