Ok My budget is less than 1,300 dollars. I like core 2 over am2, nvidia i like better but i want to see what ati configs you might make and i want the best performance for my money!!! thanks

suggest you might want to save yourself $1100 and buy a 7800gs.
the comp in your sig is none too shabby for bf2 (and probably 2142), except the gpu. seriously--i'd let the Conroe hoopla age just a little, and see what happens over the next 6 months as millions of Core 2's get into eager hands. -

i totally agree with this. your sytem is pretty decent as it is. in fact, if i had your system, i wouldnt even bother with any upgrades right now (i have a 2.6ghz and a 6600gt 128mb and 2gb pc3200). but if you really do want that graphics boost, just get a new vga card, thats about it.Originally posted by megawhompertoo

so ya, if anything, just get yourself a new 7 series card and you will be 2142 ready. plus, if you do wait longer, you can save up more money, and prices will also come down a bit.Comment

Can't really complain with what you got, wait till 2007 before you get a new comp. I built my comp and plan to use it till it is unusable, before this computer i was using one from 1994, the last game i remember playing on it was full throttle.Comment

maybe, but i wouldn't expect too much more than your desktop. between the thermal cycling and the modified (GO) gpu i would still expect roughly the same gaming experience. as for the advanced processor, bf2 simply won't take advantage of a dual core processor in any way that you'd appreciate it over a 3.2ghz single core.Originally posted by mbx5_spec

a 7800gs in your current config would make you happy gamer. if you just want to spend more money, then a dual-core x2 running 7900's in sli and 2gb of dual-channel ddr2 800mhz ram, or a core 2 running x1900xt's in x-fire with 2gb 800mhz ram will get you there, if you recycle hds, opticals, a case, and by a 600W psu for $100...for around a total of ~$1,3000. the games WILL be a tad prettier, but will they be $1,000 worth more than you could have gotten with just a $200-$230 video card?....

The intel/ati setup is a little more future proof. Both of them would allow you to pause and admire every 2-d blade of grass on Karkand, if that's what you're going after.
You may (or may not) need a beefier power supply. You may WANT one anyway if your current psu is more than a year or two old. Dual 12v+ rails are now mainstream, and there is better circuitry out there that will sense a power fluctuations and shut down your pc (over voltage protection) before the jolt is communicated to the critical components. Active PFC will lend a great deal more efficiency and stability to the power draw from your components, but may not be worth the money. At any rate, an excellent way to burn cash (other than upgrading one's 'putener every couple of weeks) is to attach an aging power supply with dated technology to the newest components on the market.
