will putting AS5 on my stock AMD HSF lower the temps any?

this is before i will be upgrading to a Tuniq Tower in a few weeks or so

well i ordered it. but i have some ?'s about the installation of it.

one of my friends said i only need it on the cpu, and i watched a vid of a guy putting the as5 on the hsf and the ihs http://www.overclock.net/gallery/sho...to/354/cat/501

i have the ihs on my cpu now, so do i place the as5 on the ihs and hsf aswell?

Arctic silver 5 compared to what? The crappy heat pad on the stock hs & fan? then yes you should see a drop in CPU temps. There will even be a difference between AS5 & AS3.

yea just a pea size dot on the cpu and apply the heatsink, and it will evenly spread it across with the pressure from hsf.

You wont see temps trops in a 1-2 week or so. It will take some time to get AS5 work properly.

Yep. The break in time is around 200 hours. I just took off the stock amd hs scrap and put a layer of artic silver 5. Right off the bat the idle temp was 2 degrees lower. I cant wait to see when the stuff really kicks in:evil:

AS5 + Tuniq Tower 120 + TT side panel 250mm fan = lower temps

Your right, you should not spread it before hand, and i would say smaller then a pea size dot, maybe 3/4 of a pea?

yes, just follow the directions on the arctic silver website. even on the tube itself it says to go to the website for instructions. dont listen to anyone who says to apply with your hands, the pressure from the heatsink against your cpu will spread it.

as far as temperatures go, mine didnt really change much. actually, in the first week, my temperatures actually increased by about 5 degrees. but after some time while it set, it dropped back down to the normal temps, and now months later its a bit lower.

oh, and im also using a P4, not an amd.

Tuniq Tower, are those heavy, because i notice you have the expert, just hope you don't snap your board. Will you be overclocking any?

Holy****, i just checked and boy is that thing heavy as hell, i would definately not risk it, go for the Thermalright xp-120 or xp-90 (not the copper), depending on how much money you want to spend, i would go for the 120 cause you can put a bigger fan on, which can move the same amt of air as a 90, but alot less loud, which you would probably want. I lapped my xp-120 and also am using as5 and my temps read at 27-30c when gaming, but the experts cencor is crazy so i put it at about 35 to 38c. The expert board and g.skill ram overclock like crazy, i have them both, so have fun with that, My ram won't go higher then roughly 275mhz at stock timings and voltage, so i might put it on a devider with my cpu so i can get 2.9 and tighten up the timings. I got an opty 170, think i have it at 2.68 at stock voltage, got it to 2.5 at below stock voltage.

Your choice, what size case do you have, it might be too big. So since you are looking into that, your probably gunna do some seriouse o/cing, like 2.9 with high voltages, because that would be the only time you would need something with that much cooling power for that high price.
