WiFi or LAN which should I choose?

I have a single computer at the moment but I am building a second, of course I want the second to have internet access etc. but I also need this second computer to run games like BF2 over the net without huge pings and I am inquiring into whether I should use LAN or WiFi to connect to the net.

I'd say use Lan cos wifi networks are really annoying to setup and can lose connection due to interference.

LAN if you dont want high pings but it depend what servers you are playing in.

I thought a 1gb LAN would be the better choice as it would have lower pings and less lag than a WiFI connection going at 54~108mbps
ever heard of DVA squad 24/7 karkand? thats the server I use most with pings of about 60~100 sont know where its based though.

Yes they are different dont listen to him. Look LAN is better the WIFI as there are less chance for problems with a cable.

Only use WIFI if you MUST.

WLAN is extremely easy to set up, also its unlikely you will loose your connection in a small area like you house you only start to see connection problems when your 100+m away and even then an antenna will boost your signal to much further.

Also if its just in your home you wont see a significant increase in your ping in most cases it wont be noticeable at all.

The-Overlord-ehT its up to you, where are these computers going to be? if its easy to put in a LAN cable then go for that if its not so easy then think about a WLAN

these computers may be in 2 adjacent rooms but if I get my way there both going to be in the same room

its simple. sry 4 stating the obvious below, but there really isnt any tangible differences for gaming. there would be tangible differences if you wanted to operate a high volume of file traffic over lan. cabled would win hands down. but the net connection that is piped down the network will not know the difference. it literally is a wired network without the wires.

heres the dlow.

use lan cabled if you are near, and dont mind linking a cable to both pcs.

use wi-fi if you are not near and/or dont want a cable trailing or structured.

ping is not affected by cabled or wifi. its such a low-level element of the tcp/ip infrastructure that it couldnt care less about networks schmetworks

i get the same pings through gigabit cable as i do with wi-fi

i play wi-fi for bf2 and get pings of <20 approx on my native uk servers.

its a personal, aesthetic and evironmental choice

p.s. wifi can end up being a little teeny bit more adaptable in the sense that if you down the road get a games console, a laptop, another box etc etc, you can just snap on a cheap adaptor and have the roaming element!

I used to use WiFi to play BF2 and I lost connection anytime someone used the microwave in the next room. Didn't notice any problems with normal websurfing or with BF42, just BF2. I've seen posts from others with the same problem. I'd recommend using cables if at all possible.

friend had something similar with his dects, i assume you tried all the channels?, we swapped the channel of the wifi adaptor from 11 to 5 and all was well after that.

Just to clarify, both WiFi and wired will behave the same in your home. Both are very much faster than your connection to the world (cable, DSL, etc.), so your ping will remain the same. As posted earlier you must decide if you can deal with wires running around the house, or want to do some wire installation to make it neat. Wireless routers are quite easy to set up these days, in a few simple steps. Just make sure you turn on security.

Other than that, if you go wireless remember that if uses the same frequency as a microwave oven, and a 2.4Mhz cordless phone. So try to keep your wireless gear away from those, or invest in a 5.8Mhz cordless or a wire-connected phone.

If you go wired, try not to damage the wire like running it under something heavy or repeated abuse such as crimping, or your pet bunny chewing on it. That messes up the twists inside, causing attenuation and errors. Although again, the 1000/100/10 port on your motherboard is way faster than your broadband.
