Should i go with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+

or the Pentium D 3.4Ghz

Both are close to the same price, but the AMD would require me to get a new mobo which would make the price just about even

I say buy an asus p5w dh dlx and pick up a nice e6300 for 219 at zipzoomfly, but that's just me....

But actually, go with the P4 because it is an LGA 775 (socket t). The AMD is socket 939, which is dead technology like an agp slot. Go for an LGA 775 cpu or an AM2 cpu. Nobody's buying AGP mobos, they buy PCI-E. Nobody's buying Socket 939, they buy AM2/LGA 775, hope that helps

Pentium D is poop, but I'm not a big fan of going into a dead platform (Socket 939) either. How much money are you willing to spend for this upgrade? Getting an AM2 motherboard would let you get better CPU's later on, but it would also require you to get some DDR2 memory.

But if you don't feel like spending the extra money to go into AM2, the 4200 is by far the better buy.

Going with Core 2 Duo would definitely be the best choice if he can afford it

Yep, but I don't know if the current 965 boards will be able to support Kentsfield. I have seen them run on the 975 chipset though...

Get the AMD 4200+ if you have to choose between those. But I'd say get the same chip for AM2. For that price though you could get the cheapest core 2 chip which could beat both of those chips.

id get AM2, then you could just get an Am3 cpu next year and you wont have to upgrade your mobo. (unless you want to use the ddr3....)
