    Will 800mhz DDR2 run at 533mhz?

My motherboard fried last week, and I'm getting an ECS p4m800 PRO 478 mobo to replace it. I have the option of putting in either ddr or ddr2 ram. I was planning on upgrading to 2 gb ddr ram anyway (from 2x512mb), but now I have the option of going with ddr2. The motherboard, however, only supports 533mhz speed, so my question is whether or not faster (i.e. 800mhz) DDR2 will run at 533mhz, similar to the way a stick of 400mhz DDR will run just fine in a MOBO that only supports speeds up to 333mhz.

Any help would be appreciated. You can even tell me to "g0 buy a c0nr03, n00b!", but I'm still happy with my 3.0E preschott and agp x800xt AIW for another year, while prices are falling. Not that I don't appreciate all the folks who are paying to beta test my future hardware for me. I'll have a beer in honor of your (wallet's) sacrifice, right after "Conroe, rev. 2.3" is released.

    :)

link to my new MOBO, hopefully here tomorrow:

I am no expert i am sure someone with more knowledge will tell you. But i believe it will, you should be able to go into the bios and clock the memory down, and it will also give you better timmings.

Thanks; looks like I'm getting 2gb of 800mhz ddr2 to tide me over until I can take the dual-core plunge. Will be nice not having to buy new ram when I buy a new mobo/processor/gpu combo later.

Thanks folks; youze guys are teh greatest...now I'm starting to get a little misty-eyed...this always happens when new ram comes along...hearing pitter-patter of smaller, faster transistors just makes me lose it...

        ....bwwwaaaah....

yes, it will run just fine.

I use pc4000 RAM in a mobo that only supports up to pc3200 RAM. Don't try to run it at T1 though.

By the way, you might not have to even go into the bios and clock it down, it might happen automaticly.
