If you want to start upgrading in steps, then buy this pc:

add one more gig of memory at your leisure, and you're gaming with everything on high for the next two years, with no stuttering/slow loading effects.

oh, by the way--the build up top isn't bad, but this one's easy.

you may need a better psu than hp puts in to drive a great gpu, but that'll be easy with the leftover scratch. (edit: the money left over + the rebate that you MUST remember to send in :) )

my dad has that exact same computer and it can run anything. That's a good idea.

Yeah. The major manufacturers are clearing their shelves in order to ship the new Conroe-based systems. There are some amazing deals to be found--even on clearance shelves--pc's would make great gaming rigs with just a couple hundred more dollars for a nice gpu.

This is the first time since I've been buying/building/fixing pc's that buying a budget pc off the shelf for gaming makes good sense.

tw33k's got your pc posted already. can't beat that price/performance budget. if you could find room in that budget for another $100 an x2 3800 would last a bit longer.

I did the same thread yesterday and here is the conclusion
CPU X2 3800 = 150$
GPU X1800XT = 200$ (you can change this one to 7600gt)
RAM 2x1024 Corsair = 219$ (buy a cheaper RAM DDR2 667)the 1 I have is 800
MB ASUS M2N-E = 95$
HDD WD 250GB = 80$
case+psu(450watt)+mouse+keyboard+speakers = 45$
LG DVD Rom= 32$
Total= 821$ (The prices here are without Mail in rebate) with it it will go to 720$).
