depends what kind of comp it is. i.e. Gateways can only be updated through the gateway.com site themselves, and you can't go to intel/amd for bios updates otherwise you get a CMOS error....

Re: A venture into upgrading my BIOS
If it is anything like a Dell bios update, it should be pretty much idiot proof (not saying you are). I would assume that a Compaq/HP bios update works the same as a Dell, just double click on the exe, and it does it for you.
About the only thing is you should make sure that you have nothing running in the background before starting (no extra programs, and make good and sure that your AV is disabled). Also might be a good idea to disconnect your ethernet connection first as well, to prevent any possibility of an outside influence.

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER
NEVER
NEVER
Interrupt the power to the computer while updating.
If you do. Well... you probably will need a new board.

Some boards dont have seperate chips.Originally posted by tw33k2514wont need a new board just a new BIOS chip.
As a rule I use my UPS backup to maintain the power. It saved me a few times. I actually had power go out during the first install of BF2 about halfway thru when it first came out. The battery kept it all running for the 10 minutes until I got the lights back.
