Yeah man I would recommend a new PC. I just purchased an ATI 512MB X1600 Pro about a month ago and that is really the only upgrade I needed but you need a little more than that.

I think you should start OCing that processer instantly, great for overclocking and you have a good board for overclocking, (Was the shiznizzle a year ago.)

You know, you really dont need to add alot more. Install another 512 of memory and a new video card. I am selling my ATI Radeon X700 Pro. (check out the off topic section) in fact, you should look at all I have to sell there and replace that Intel crap. AMD is much better for gaming. I ran my BF2 settings on high with AA on.

Hey guys my computer's gonna be 3 years old this october and i think its time for an upgrade, heres what i have now:
Asus P4P800
P4 2.4GHz Northwood
Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB DDR
Corsair 512MB DDR 400
40GB Ultra ATA100 HD

I'm not super duper computer savy so i dont really know what all the abbreviations mean, and i know my hd and ram need a shot in the arm, but what would you guys recommend to play bf2 with the graphics up fairly high and maintain a reasonable budget?

So,

1. Oc processer (look at ocforums.com)
2. Get 2 Gigs of some nice ram.
3. Get a 7800GS or similar AGP card, and it should last you a good while.

Well 2 gig of RAM is about $175 and a good video card for $130-150.

This is what I've been doing. I sell my old system for about $400. Then build a new one for $700-800. So every year to year and a half I get a new PC for less than $400. It's worked great for the long hall.

If you want to save money though just do the RAM and video card. I'd check the forums to see if other people with the same setup are running high graphics before you do though.

I just don't like sinking money into older hardware. If your gona spend $300-350 IMO it's better to spend $400-450 and get something you can upgrade later. With a PCIe, SLI and DDR2 you'll be set for a while and if you need more power later, just put in a 2nd video card and better CPU.

You can go the route of just upgrading the RAM and adding a new AGP video card. PCIe has double the bandwidth of AGPX8 and runs at 133 mhz instead of 66 mhz.

Again this is just my opinion. I've played BF2 on an Intel 2.4 with an AGPX8 9800 pro and was stuck on low/medium settings. My new rig smokes that, not even close.

Bottom line will be how much you want to spend.

Graphics card 6600 256MB and 512mb more ram will run nicely!

i appreciate all the input guys! just as a note, the only time the computer really gets tested is playing bf2... i use it mostly for going online

that shouldn't be a problem, i built my current computer 3 years ago, i read enough then to get me by, the problem is now i don't know what's good anymore, especially since there's so much out there and so many different specs to keep track of

so what kind of mobo and processor should i be looking into? i've heard AMD is better than intel for games but i dunno how true that is

Well in that case....

To save money, don't go top of the line. AMD chips are the way to go right now AMD X2 64 - 3800s are pretty cheep right now. Find a good mobo to match that and something like a nvidia 7800gt (PCIe) should be good bang for the buck. Get 2 gigs of RAM and reuse the rest of your old rig and it should play everything on high graphics very smooth.

I have AMD X2 64 3500, ASUS A8n32-SLI mobo, 2 gigs RAM, 7800gt and everything runs perfect on all high settings.

Most MOBOs will have PCI-express now instead of AGP 8x. The more expensive ones will have SLI abilities (no need for that, IMO). Basically, if you want to upgrade your MOBO, you will have to upgrade everything else that goes on it as well - GPU, RAM, CPU.

I'm being sarcastic but I'm serious. The problem your going to have is you will be stuck with an AGP X8 video card.

The Mobo is the problem, it's AGP X8 graphics slot and an Intel 2.4 is ok but not great.

I would take the case, HD, PSU, CPU and get a new Mobo, RAM and video card. But that would involve you building it yourself.
