Conclusions

The overall question that this article was supposed to answer is, "Is Windows 64-Bit for me?". After putting both versions of the OS through 11 tests, I think that the answer stands at a clear no.

with my X2 3800, I run XP Home, tried the x64 version and saw the same thing..

OK, I just ordered my new components:
AMD Athlon 64X2 AM2 3800+

Corsair Dual Channel TWINX PC6400 1024MB
BFG 7900 GT PCIe
Hopefully, 1 gig of RAM will be enough.

First glance the increase in performance was mind blowing. I will run 3Dmark06 soon and post the results.

So did you dare to get x64? -*EDIT- I've re-ready your recent post & have seen that you didn't*

After installing x64, I found that there are a few drawbacks, mainly driver support- in my case, my webcam would not work, MX510 would not work properly & the 64 bit creative drivers are buggy as hell.

If you use a software firewall you will struggle to find one that works in a 64 bit environment, dvp also would not work on my av software. Saying that, Security programmes now are slowly beginning to support 64 bit. I suggest NOD32- but you will need to include the cost of these security packages when you cost your new rig up.

Macromedia Flash Player will not work in ie x64 & I never really knew how much I used Real Player until I installed x64. You can get emulators, but I have a number of pcs & like to keep my gaming rig as pure as possible.

Also, some programmes will not install on the new os, including some fairly recent games.

I wanted something to build that was out of the ordinary, but if I consider the compromises I've had to accept I end up being fairly neutral as to whether it was the right decision.

Also, with Vista coming along, I worry that I have the XP version of Windows ME!!

BF2 runs on it no problem though
