I have a question: Is it normal for your chipset to idle in the high seventies-low eighties? Could this be a problem?

Something has to be wrong. What board do you have? Does it have good ventilation? Fan setup? Are they blowing the right direction? These are temps in C, not F, correct? If so, you're less than 20C from boiling.

You need to find out why no fresh air is getting to your chipset. Sooner. Not later.

I think I may have found the reason. MY fans are working great, but I think the chipset cooling died. I put in an order for some good ol' Zalman heatsinks. My mobo

Nice mobo, glad you didn't toast it. Should be normal after you drop on a new (good) heatsink, or a chipset fan. Zalman usually makes good stuff.

your chipset coordinates where the direction the data flows, and to some degree the priorities, so it could...if it was hot enough to impact it's performance.
