Same old question RAID vs Raptor

Hello

I searched forum a lot but still have no idea. My rig is following:
Motherboard Intel 915PCYL
3Ghz Intel 2M cache
RAM 2Gb
Video Ati X800
HDD WD2500JD 250Gb SATA 7200RPM 8MB cache

So the current bottleneck in loading BF2 is I guess the HDD.

I have limited cash, so getting RAIDed Raptors is a bit expensive.

So now I have to choose

1) Another 250GB drive and make RAID
2) Buy Raptor (which is of couse twice expensive as another 250Gb drive)

Raptor is cool but quite expensive. I want to hear experiences from these people who have RAID setup at home and how it improved (or not) their BF2 loading times.

if it was me, i would get 1 raptor, at least. jus personal preference. perhaps in future, when u got the money again, get another raptor, reformat and put it on raid.

a raptor should be fine...but it will only increase your loading time by about 15-20 sec

If you spend $150 on a 10Krpm, 74gb raptor expecting a great improvement in the time it takes to be in-game, you are probably going to be dissapointed.

If it was me, I'd save up the monetary equivalent of 3 raptors, and buy a new mid-end dual-core processor + mobo in December/January when the prices come down a little. That would give you at least a 50% increase in system performance (might double it if you believe all the Conroe hype) for only 3x the price you'd pay for a 25% increase in HD performance alone.

But its not me and my money--its you and yours.

I seriously question the claim of a Raptor and loading times...I am using a single SATA150@ATA133 speed for stability...and still am one of the first 3-5 people in the game.

My entire loading of the map is around 20 seconds...so how could a Raptor alleviate all of the loading time? It can't. I do not argue that it is faster...but by how much? Mere seconds only...and only a few seconds at best.

Honestly, all that overpriced crap is just a bunch of crap, designed to remove money from your wallet. Raptors/RAID belong in servers.

Windows will load faster. It's also probable that a hd running at 10Krpm will move enough data to load the map and then facilitate the punkbuster scan faster than one moving at 7200rpm, heavily depending on the rest of system. Like you, I question the value of buying a HD that is half the size of a normal hd, for twice the price, with only a 25% improvement in speed.

But you really can't question what people do with their money. Might as well "flame" somebody for putting fat rims on their pickup trucks. It's their money, and Western Digital needs to feed their families, too!

Well, the guy did specifically say he is limited on funds...apparently he doesn't "need" to do RAID or Raptor.

All I'm saying is he should save that money for his next video card purchase instead of wasting it on decreasing nothing more than a few seconds of loading time.

He currently has an x800(plain x800?)...nice card, I love mine...but it's replacement time is rapidly approaching. A new card is where that money should go.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was agreeing, but in a different way.

edit, I love my rickety old x800xt AIW, too. I'm staying AGP for another year, at least.

I have to HD running in raid but I also have a 4400 x2 AMD processor and 2 gigs of XMS corsair ram and I can get in game fly to the other teams base and steal their stuff, I can also cap flags before anyone can do anything about it. :)
