7800GS Rumblings

Hey guys, so I've noticed a lot of people making complaints about 7800GS and weird stuttering in BF2. First of all is there a serous problem with the compatibility of this card and BF2 and also, is it worth it for me, or will my CPU (in sig) bottleneck it, any advice would be appreciated.

I've been looking at this one for a while

Edit: Or would it be worth waiting and jumping head first into 64 bit processor and PCI-e?

I haven't got an unlimited budget at the moment it stands at £300 ($552.544)

Well with £300 and if your not too bothered about re-installing windows, you should certainly go PCI-e and get at least a 64bit proccessor.

I wouldn't upgrade your system unless you can step into an X2...

That would go over his £300 budget :p

And please explain to me why he would need an x2 to play BF2 (or any other current game for that matter)

The components I listed would let you play with all settings at high quite comfortably, especially if you allowed another £50 onto the £275.95 for another gig of ram.

I didn't say he needed an X2 to play BF2.

That being said, in general his whole system will run smoother and better with a dual core CPU which is why I recommended it. I would also wait a couple of weeks for the Conroe to launch because AMD is slated to have major price drops at that time which should make it affordable.

However I disagree with you over dual core, most applications around at the moment don't support dual cores, an x2 would be nice, but it is unnecessary and more pricey.

Of course if conroe makes the prices drop enough for an x2, then go for it, its always good to be future proof.

You don't need individual applications to be able to take advantage of dual core processors in order to see an overall improvement in system performance. Windows will automatically split cpu cycle requests between the 2 cores.

You only need dual core if you Plan to run BF2/Temp Monitoring/Fraps/Music in BG/General Crap. Dual core is also good if you have a million windows open while trying to encode a movie while performing a virus scan.

Have you used both? If you had I don't think you'd be quoting someone else, rather you would be speaking from personal experience as I am.

There is an appreciable difference in system responsiveness between using a dual core (or variant such as HT) and a single core. In addition to background tasks completing in a timely manner. Overall the system runs smoother and switches between tasks much quicker.

Well, its up to you EAGLE_18, if you plan to be doing video editing or other tasks with high cpu usage, you should of course, splash out a bit more for a dual core cpu. If you only plan to play games then even a cpu like mine is more than enough at the moment imo.

Dual core is good for game movie makers because you can assign fraps to one core and your game to the other.

Thanks for the plentiful replies here guys, really helpful. My intention is go for the setup that Heatseaker suggested in the first reply, It might not be that exact same but certainly similar.

I've no real need to go for a Dual Processor, I don't really run that much background programs (XFire, Vent and sometimes FRAPs). Plus I can't really afford a X2.
