PCI...what?

Hey you guys...I've heard that you need to upgrade your entire PC in order to make it compatable with a PCIe X16 motherboard...how do you know that you need the upgrade? All I can see..is that I have an older AGP motherboard...and I'd like to upgrade to PCIe...here are my system specs if they matter:

Athlon 64 3200+@ 2.2MHz will OC it..
Radeon 9800 XT 256 MB AGP-> Radeon X1600 PRO 512 MB AGP card(IF PCI doesn't work)
1 Gigabyte Corsair DDR RAM
250 Gigabyte SATA harddrive

Please, please tell me how to upgrade to PCIe....
Sorry...but I've had this thread in tech section for hours...no answers.

Can I just buy a PCIe mobo...and then a PCIe card..and upgrade?

I'm not aware of any such requirement, just buy a PCi-e mobo for your processor socket, i.e. 939, and get a card.

The most you may need is a new PSU, but if you have a fairly modern one, it'll do - just might need the PCI-e power adapters.

PCIe is ATM just for Graphic Cards. So in order to upgrade from an older System you need:
new PCIe Motherboard
new CPU that fits in the Socket of the new Motherboard
PCIe Graphicscard

You might keep the DDR RAM, HDD and other PCI cards (like Soundcard, TV card,....), Case,
Keyboard, mouse, Monitor.

PSU = Powersupply. The thing that powers your System. 400W is minimum the more the better. DO NOT BUY A NONAME PSU!!! I have nothing but trouble with mine.

Some PCI-e cards have to be plugged into the PSU, but they don't use the molex connectors (like a hard drive), but a 6 pin (or 8) PCI-e one.

If your PSU doesn't have these, you can buy an adapter that turns a molex into two of them.

I don't think you'll need to replace your processor, just get a new mobo with the same socket.

Umm...well I have an AMD Athlon 3200+ is a fairly "new" card, should fit any socket that's come out so far, and the other cards, even the FX-57, look the same, so I guess that I can just go straight for the PCIe! Sweet! I want one because I can buy a 120$ card, and get more performence than a 160$ card...which is pretty sad...but AGP is pretty sad.

Great! I'll get looking...I found a 55$ Mobo with good reviews and a PCIe slot, I'm gonna just buy that...and then...I can choose any video card that I want!

What socket is your current CPU?

Your processor will either be socket 754 ot 939, so long as you get to correct mobo (motherboard), it'll work.

You better dont order Online since you are not 100% sure what Stuff u have. I suggest you go to a dealer near you and ask them to help you. You can give them your old rig and let em build you a new system with your old parts they can use and some new stuff.
You can screw it up if u dont know how to install a MoBo and other stuff.

If you do end up buying on-line and you're in the UK, don't forget about the distance buying regulations. If you buy stuff you can, by law, tell them within 7 days that you want to return it and they have to accept it back.

My dad is the one who will install it, hes a computer programmer, but he doesn't know that much about PC's..and thats why I was put on this earth right here..

Also...I'm pretty sure that it will work because the mobo says that it will support Athlon 64 cards...so I guess I'm set to go!

Can one of you guys check it out and tell me if it'll run? Its got good ratings and is pretty cheap...my dad told me that my current rig has a 48 dollar mobo...and its run well for 1+ years.
