Or just buy the 3700+ instead of the 3800+, still very good, and a bit more inexpensive, and you can put your savings into an OS.

You can find xp anywhere online for 50 bucks or cheaper. OR Borrow a friends install disk and his serial(Did this with 2 of my computer)

Linux is a nice free alternative - I'd reccommend Ubuntu because it comes bundled with all software needed(Office, gfx, ftp, Firefox) and it's based off Debian so installing stuff is a snap. Unlike Red hat or FC.

Sorry, but that is a horrible setup. I got an AMD 4200+, dual layer dvd +- rw burner (with Litescribe), 550w sli ready power supply, sli motherboard with built in dual gigabit ethernet lan, 300GB SATA hard drive, 2Gb RAM, a case and two 7600GS 256MB video cards for $1200.

That CPU has been about the same price for a few months now, and oh well about the RAM, all that would need to be changed to ddr2 is about $30-40 more.

Changing to Intel later if he wants? Thats a pretty stupid suggestion, since it would probably take a significant jump in processing performance to entice someone to upgrade their CPU by a couple MHz, and if there was a significant increase, chances are good that you would also have to upgrade the motherboard anyway to use it.

Also, you dont have to take my suggestion, this is for the original poster. Im running basically all this in my current system and its fast as hell. Pretty much any computer out there will be obsolete in a year or two anyways. Checking Alienware and other gaming computer sites, a comperable system (but still not as good) to this will cost at least $700 more, so I still stand by my suggestion.

I was under the assumption that you very recently made the purchase. And 2048 of DDR2 800 can be found for as little as $155, same as Corsair XMS 2048 DDR1.

Also, did you mistype that last part about "changing" to DDR2? The two are NOT interchangeable. I think you just typed it weird.

Of course he would have to upgrade the mobo if he bought an AM2 then changed to Intel a year later, lol. The point being, if he did buy AM2 over 939 as you did...he is one step closer by not having to replace the ram in addition to the CPU/mobo.
I thought that part of my point was obvious the first time I wrote it.

But, why is that stupid? Lets say he gets an AM2 and loves it...15 months from now he wants a new CPU. He decides this time to try out the Conroe's instead of a newer(remember, 15 months later) AM2 CPU...which both AMD and Intel will be on version 2 by that time I imagine.

So he needs an additional $80-100 for a new mobo so what? It's better than your suggestion which 15 months from now would require ANOTHER $150 on top of my price...for new ram. Make sense now?

Today, as in right now...AM2 and socket939 are priced the same, CPU's and mobos. DDR1 and DDR2 as nearly identical again. By your own admission, $20-30. So who's suggestion is stupid?

I never said your specs sucked, only the suggestion of 939. Of course it is good, I have no immediate plans to replace mine either. But apparently you bought this months ago, when neither Conroe nor AM2 were available.

Now that both are available, and both use DDR2...it makes logical sense to purchase any system whether it be AMD or Intel using the newer standard in memory which is not DDR1 anymore.

The only people who shouldn't buy Conroe or AM2...are people like you and me who already have a 939, or large amounts of DDR1 ram we don't want to throw away.

If you are buying every piece of hardware from scratch within the next few days/week/months...then the only logical choice is DDR2: AM2 or Intel Conroe.
