BF2 Lagging On Powerful New Laptop

I have a new laptop with these specs:

    T2400 1.83ghz
    1gb DDR2 667mhz
    Mobility X1600 256 dedicated
    80gb 5,400 HDD

Now I have AA off, and everything else on "high" except shadows, lighting, and effects. Im getting constantly 50+ FPS, and it doesnt dip beliow 32 FPS in heavy firefights on a 64-player.

Yet im lagging well into the game, even when I was playing with a hardwired internet connection. Would another gig of RAM work? I dont know what is going on here.

Americas Army plays ar 60 FPS all on highest with no lag even on wireless.

    Thanks

    Help!!!

    bump please

    Is that a powerful laptop?

1.5 - 2GB of ram is needed for smooth play on high and that cpu may be a bit on the slow side.

Americas Army would probably run on a word processor - it is so resource friendly, so don't use it as a guide.

Lag, stutter and low fps are all different problems; lag is slow internet, stutter is jerkyness without low fps, and low fps is generally lower than 30-40.

Your stutter may completly dissapear if you put texture on medium, as it is very ram related.

I agree with heatseeker. That laptop is average, not powerful. I'd try lowering the graphics settings, that X1600 is a good but not brilliant graphics card. I feel at all high you are taxing its capabilities out too much. Try turning shadows and lighting down to low first, they're just superfluous eyecandy (you can see more with shadows off anyway) then fiddle with the others.

Note this is only with BF2, i'm sure your laptop will run any other game pretty well, BF2 seems to be the exception for most people though. I have much prettier and graphics intensive games run a lot better than BF2.

see how it runs on low settings. if your still getting lag, you might want to look at 2gig of ram.

This is a low end labtop. Who is it made by?

          T2400 1.83ghz
You need at least a 3.0Ghz Pentium 4 Processor or AMD Athalon 64 3000 Processor
          1gb DDR2 667mhz
You need to have at least 2GB of RAM
          Mobility X1600 256 dedicated
          80gb 5,400 HDD
Hard Drive is way to slow 7,200RPM SATA Drive at the minimum

Ok, now you're sounding a bit stupid.
-Mobile processors do things differently than desktop processors, so GHz isnt as important (think about dual core)
-You don't need 2GB, there is negligible difference between 1GB and 2GB
-You cant get hard drives that speed for a laptop

Any laptop that would have the specs you are talking about isnt a laptop, its a portable desktop using desktop components and would have a battery life of about 4 minutes.

              Sounds right to me...

That certainly isn't a powerful laptop.

Truth is the labtop is not powerful enough and you don't know what your talking about. The specs I listed above are going to get you lag free gaming and high performance.

The specs I have listed are still specs of a good labtop or should I say a mobile workstation. (Welcome to the future)

If you want to game right you get a mobile workstation not a labtop. Why because labtops/notebooks mean standard stuff. Workstation means heavy duty stuff. Last time I checked BF2 is not a lightweight game. So if you want to play with lag or some problems here and there you go for a labtop/notebook. If you want to play the game and have some serious fun without problems you go for a mobile workstation.

When your gaming heavily you plug it in to the wall. You might be able to get off with a 2.5+ ghz processor but it won't be as fun as having a 2.8+ processor.

I'm afraid its not me that statement applies to. A proper laptop is more than capable of playing BF2, so long as the graphics card is up to it. You seem to think 2GB of ram and fast processor is the key to performance in BF2, and its not.

The processor is the least necessary requirement of getting good perfomance out of BF2 (sure a celeron 1.5GHz is going to cause issues) and if you knew anything about mobile processors you'd know the MHz rating of it means little - a Pentium M CPU can actually run applications better than a desktop Pentium 4 with twice the MHz rating.

And 2GB of ram - bah! No one I know has seen any difference between 1GB and 2GB of ram. There is quite a different between 512MB and 1GB, but after that any gain is negligible unless you are trying to run at very high resolutions.

The guy who's started this thread's problem is that he's got a decent business notebook, not a gaming one. If his machine had a mobile 7900GTX in it, I'd imagine his issues would dissapear. Aside from the fact he wouldn't be able to get a CPU like the one you "suggest", if he took your ram and hdd recomendations to heart the only difference he would see would be less money in his pocket.

So please, don't come unarmed to a battle of wits. And get over your issue of being stuck on numbers as they're clearly not always correct in terms of displaying system performance - case in point look at AMDs lower clocks speeds vs. Intel's and what that equates to in the real world.

And no, the mobile workstations you refer to are not the way of the future - its a cheap ploy by some latop manufacturers to shoehorn desktop parts into a laptop to make them appear faster to people like you. They are plagued with problems, heavy, and a waste of time for anyone who's after a proper laptop/notebook.

Re: BF2 Lagging On Powerful New Laptop

As I said before you know nothing, you go by what you hear and not by reality. Regular labtops/notebooks are not faster than a pc. The processor, RAM, and Harddrive speed/space are key to performance. If you deny that than you are not a true gamer.

If you want your maps in bf2 to load faster you get a faster hard drive. (7,200-->10,000RPMs) If you want it to go even faster you get RAID 1 with two of the drives. Even faster you go 15,000RPMs

Game doesn't seem to be running just right you upgrade the RAM and processor. Can't see everything rendering as fast as you want it you upgrade the Graphics Card. This is a well known fact and will never go away. The higher the clock speed the better this is for AMD and INTEL chips. The more RAM the better the faster the better do I need to say more.

The biggest mistake made by gamers are thinking that they can play BF2 to the fullest with a labtop (standard labtop). A mobile workstation is something that can be used to play high end games like bf2, and create them as well. Ranging from High end Photoshop work, Graphics Rendering, Audio/video mastering you name it. This is what the gaming industry uses to get the work done. So why not use one yourself if you like to game on the run. :)

So if someone tells you you need to upgrade your RAM, processor, power supply etc. There is a good chance they are right no matter what you think.

No, sorry, I go by 7 years dealing soley in the mobile market. Having worked for ASUS Notebooks division and selling tens of thousands of notebooks I picked up a small amount of knowledge about them. The very fact you refer to a desktop computer as a "pc" and a desktop replacement as a "mobile workstation" gives you away as someone with enough computer hardware knowledge to seem savvy while not actually being savvy. I'm not sure if any of your last post was factually accurate.

BF2 will run fine on a standard laptop provided it has a good graphics chipset. I have played BF2 on a proper laptop with a 7900GTX and it was as good as playing on a high end desktop.

If you bothered to listen to this thread starter's issue, it was about in game performance. Having the uber-geek hard drive setup is not going to solve this, and its not a CPU issue either. It MIGHT be memory, but I suspect its more graphics card related. The graphics card is the most critical part of BF2 or any game's fps performance and delivers the biggest bang for buck performance wise, if you were a gamer you might know that.

You also seem to know little about modern CPU architecture as the best CPUs currently available are all below the 3GHz speed you insist on.

"So if someone tells you you need to upgrade your RAM, processor, power supply etc. There is a good chance they are right no matter what you think." - no, the fact they dont even mention your graphics card proves they dont know what they are talking about.

The Core Duo's are ok but they don't destroy the p4s. A core duo system starts to lock up or respond slowly after you start doing some hard core video editing. Especially if your RAM is not up to par. I've played on them all to see their limits. The only ones that seem to say is that all you have are the
Intel P4, Intel dual core P4, and the 64 bit versions, Xeon processors 2.8 and up seem to laugh at you no matter what you through at them.

AMDs Athlon 64 bit chips, including dual core but the best of the AMD world are the Opterons including the dual opterons.

Now download all of them and run them full screen notice the difference in performance if you have more than one computer with different processors in front of you.

The T2 and true crimes trailers should give you something. Then once your done doing that try rendering them using a video editing program in 1080 resolution to an avi, mpeg, etc.

Then do the same with a bf2demo file at a quality level of 4 or higher. You will notice that your processor usage will be insane don't forget to open the video in window mode so you can observe the usage

If your usage goes over 55% then you may have a problem.
