Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 vs. AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800

With only 9 days left until the release of Intel Conroe and the price drop of AMD I need to make the final decision and I need to make it soon

My two choices are:

The Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 - $183
and
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 - $170

I realy don't know which one to pick... they are close in price, that is not a factor

I do plan on overlocking - but just a bit, don't want to buy a new fan or anything

What is the differnce in performance? I guess that is what will decide

Well price is no problem, since is pretty much the same. About OC Intels have always been better overclockers than AMD(rumor that Conroe is no different). What do you mean about not wanting to buy a new fan or anything??? you mean you dont want to buy a new mobo and so forth. I dont have any numbers but i am pretty sure performance will be better than the X2 3800.
I my self will be getting a 6600. But i will be waiting till the nForce 500 series intel mobo comes out.

THe E6300 kicks it's butt end of story, conroes do 20-30% better than their frequency (ghz) says compared to AMD cpus. So a E6300 should be at about 2.2-2.4ghz AMD dual core CPU. In other words, get the conroe.

The E6300 is 183 bucks at launch, and AMD dual cores will be 35-50% off on July 24. ANyways, wait till Flanker finds this topic.

what do you base this on? I'm not claiming otherwise, but I've read dozens and dozens of writeups that disagree or place intel and AMD on equal ground OC-wise.

I am building a computer... fans come with the CPU's right?

I just meen I'm not intersted in buying any fans (aside from the ones that come with...)

Unless you buy an OEM CPU you will get a fan and HS, but its not going to be too good if you plan on overclocking

ooo... I have a general question than...

many parts I plan on buying are "OEM":
speakers
keyboard
soundcard
hard drive
operating system...

does that meen I will be missing something?

Conroe should overclock better since it's on 65nm process and has a slightly bigger 14 stage pipe.

hmm... I'm only going to be using the standard fan that comes with the CPU (probobly not the best)..

guess I won't be doing any overlocking actually... or maybe a TINY bit (if the fan can handle it)
