    Wow, Vista is demanding

A lot of you guys are saying 2gigs are a bit overkill and 4 gigs especially. Maybe not...

Windows Vista Requires at least 512mb of ram. Windows XP only requires 128mb, but 512 is a step up . 2gigs will be standard on computer within two years probably.

They are talking about windows XP. Of course we'll need more ram for Vista.

4GB is overkill right now because Vista isn't out. You only buy more memory when you start to need it. Right now, 2GB can run most tasks that an average gamer or workstation user would demand of it without the memory filling up. When Vista comes, I agree, 4GB will not be as much of an overkill option as it is right now. Some people might even be able to rationalize it to themselves.

4GB is overkill regardless, when vista comes out your going to need a hell of a lot of ram for it to do things Linux has been doing for years on <1GB.

Yea i heard it can use as much as 800MB on startup... thats just stupid. Looks like 2/4GB will be the next big things for home users and gamers.

vista will be optimized, but yes the requirements for each thing (even the lowest verasion) will be higher than XP.

XP came out 6 years ago, a quadrupling of required memory isnt a surprise for an industry that doubles speed and size every year and a half.

Linux, the average requirement is around 512MB-1GB of ram with anywhere as low at like 16MB of ram. XP to work at its full efficancey requires 1-2GB Vista will require 3-4GB to run efficiently.

Thing is there isn't much that's new in Vista or that should require so much ram, its all just memory hogging crap.

Linux people often come off like Mac people...

Noses firmly up in the air, thumbs firmly up eachothers butts and middle fingers firmly facing Microsoft.

Can't we all just get along?

well, I was told that 512mb could make it run smoothly, but you could most certainly use 128mb, but don't expect to use the Aero glass feature. That's part of the reason for the 512mb of RAM.

512 will make XP run smoothly but definitly not Vista. You can just forget about using 128 for vista all together.

Linux is open source and custumizable for each application. You're right, linux can have lower requirements, but who cares. Its not a consumer operating sytem by any means, not mainstream.

You're far more likely to find linux on a server with 16GB of ram, or a Tivo with a trival portion or ram.

Bottomline linux can have lower requirements, but its not always going to be running on a dual core Conroe, Crossfire rig etc....

Vista is aimed at current and future x86 PC's, Linux is aimed at anything, and of course it has lower system requirements when you run a version tailored for a Pentium III or a Tivo for instance.

EDIT: I'm running Vista Beta BTW on my P3 1.2ghz laptop with 512MB SDRAM, and it's running around 90% of the speed or better than Windows XP, and it's in a beta state. On a much older machine than Vista is targetted for.

Not using the Aero glass interface, the OS runs fine on older hardware. Remember the major reason for the higher system requirements is the new 3d UI, something that Linux doesnt have, and therefore insnt comparable.
