Upgrading RAM

Hi.

I'm sick and tired of my sucky 25 fps. On 64 servers I get around 25 fps in action (Mainbase for example = 80fps), and what's that for? My RAM? Would 2GB give me a minimum of 50fps?

My specs:

Athlon XP 3200+
ABIT Nforce 2 NF7
2x 512MB kingston pc-3200
Sapphire X800XL 256MB
120GB maxtor

So, if I'd buy 2x 1gb kingston sticks to replace my 512 stick, would my fps go to heaven?

well....its kinda tricky, it could be RAM, or it could be that and many other things. your CPU isnt THAT great but at least its not like a 2600+. the XP's are kinda old. your GPU is okay I guess so im pretty sure thats not the problem but it also depends on what settings you are running at.
seeing as how you only have 1GB now, 2GB will surely help, but I cannot say HOW MUCH it will help. if you REALLY want more FPS, and better FPS with higher settings, and can afford it go for it. but if you are sorta low on cash or something I wouldnt at the moment.

Currently I use medium (dynamic shadows and lightning off..), and I can only get good fps at EVERYTHING on low. 1024x768 resolution. I can't see any perfomance difference when using AA.

And btw, I'm not getting the kingston modules, I'm getting Twinmos CL2.5, 2x1gb.

I think it's more of a video card issue than the RAM.

Put it this way.. Is it always laggy? or is it laggy when your ina jeep speeding along a road? Do the FPS get killed when arty comes down or are they always sh*te? If they die horribly when traveling fast or in arty, but are ok the rest of the time, you need mroe RAM, if they are always just shot, better vid card! But as you rrun on med settings, i would say get a new video card. I have 1GB of RAM and run all high, textures med with fine FPS.

Same with me, and i have little to no lag. When i put textures to med, i have the lag in the begginging of the gmae, but that soon subsides. Im going to go with its the video card thats the bottleneck. BF2 will only use more than 1 gig of ram when you have settings all on high, so right now all of your ram isnt being used. So a new video card would be your answer...

Agreed get a better video card

Stick a few on high - game looks better
Stick a few that arn't as important to you on low/medium - good fps

Well my setup is reasonably similar to yours (dunno how the processors compare though), or at least was until a couple of weeks ago when i upgraded to 2 gigs.

But even when I had 1 gig like you, I was getting a lot better than 25fps average (except palace on warlord or Iron gator of course), more like an average of 35fps and that is at 1024*768, with everything on high except dynamic shadows on medium, and 2xAA.

So in short I don't know where your poor performance is coming from, but something's not right.

Well, average fps IS 35, but in action at 64 player servers it drops to 25-30. No, arty doesnt drop fps or driving in a jeep. Even if I put higher settings, the fps is the same, no change imo, except on full settings. So, the FPS tends to stay same, until I drop everything at low and 800x600.

I have 1 GB of RAM and I unfortunately, can not run BF2 at full operating potential, even with my eVGA7900 GT CO. As stated earlier my problem is while driving fast or in a large battle my performance drops and I start lagging. I have another 1GB stick coming next week.

And your vid card is fine, the x800 is a good card. I would take a guess and I would say add another GB of RAM and you should see a big difference.

Better video card I do agree on but get 2 gigs of ram to make the game much more smoother and better.

The vid card IS fine for me, I dont need 100fps all the time. Just 50fps minimum. Also, important notice I forgot to say, is that I had exactly the same FPS, no no even better with 9600XT! That was before 1.3 patch, I had a terrible perfomance loss in 1.2.

What drivers would you suggest for and sapphire X800XL AGP? I've heard that with new drivers you have good FPS. Currently I have 5.3 catalyst.

um I recommended the latest Catalyst Drivers but there are other good ones out there as well I just forgot what they were called.

Okay, what do you think of the TwinMos ram btw? Good?

And, what's the steps I have to do when I change my drivers?

1. DL new ones
2. turn off the internet
3. Remove old ones

Then what?
