Graphics Card Upgrade, suggestions?

Hi,

Recently BF 2 won't load the map when i try to join the server, i think this must be because of the new patch requiring a higher clibre graphics card then the one which i have got. At the moment i have a Nividia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and i've decided to upgrade.

I don't really know which one i should upgrade to on my machine. I don't have PCI Express and my budget is under £100.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The reat of your system specs would help. You have said you don't have a PCI-E slot which is no problem, but do you have an AGP slot?

I've got an AGP and I've also got PCI slots, but not PCI-express slots.

AMD Anthlon xp 1800+ 1.44 GHz
1.00 Gb RAM
DVD - RW drive
DVD drive

The mobo model name? If you bought a dell or something else, it's model number?

So, for educational purposes, a 7800gs is the best agp card you can get. However, your processor would not let you take full advantage of the card (and it's probably about 50 pounds outside your budget).

So...I'm thinking you probably shouldn't dump too much cash into that system. If it was MY money, I'd look on ebay for a Radeon 9800 pro for ~$50 to give me a reliable low-medium BF2 visuals at 1024x768. Then again, ebay isn't so big across the pond...so I might look for any of the 6800 series here (bear in mind that I have no idea what Brits usually pay for components, but I've seen this site reccommended on these forums before):

The gainward looks like a nice card, but I don't know why they put 512mb on it (probably more a marketing decision than a engineering one). The other 6800's are also slower compared to the gainward (core clocks of 350 v. 450 is nothing to sneeze at; the memory on the gainward is also faster), but they are also lower priced. Ah, the BFG 6800 also has a lifetime warranty...

ouch save up for annew pc. As a new card will be bottlenecked and you wont see that much of a increase thanks to the 1gb of ram and that CPU!

Wot speed is the RAM? You may be able to buy a 939 soc machine now the parts are cheap and use ur existing 1Gb of RAM in it.

Okay, It's not a Dell or anything, a home made PC!!! And the CPU is actaully 1.8 GHz not 1.4GHz, sorry.

However I've decided to buy a new motherboard with PCI Express, a new CPU and a new graphics card. I might also upgrade my RAM to 1.5 GB or 2.0GB.

I was fixin' to say! My other machine had a 1800+ in it, and it operated at 1.532 Ghz.
