ok, first off, i dont think this is the right section, but it said hardware, so what the hell

ok, im planning on gett ing a new graphics card cause my current one is crap

it says that i need at least a 300 wat power supply, and i just opened up my pc and i have a 250wat. so i need more and am thinking of getting this power supply:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817174022
ok, so my question is this : will all this stuff work with my computer?? i dont know much about computer hardware (althought i am learning), but i know that i have a dell dimensions 8300, and havent done anything to it other than buying that other card and a gig of ram. so im just wondering, kinda as a final check, if all this would work on my pc. can someone plz help?

Ok, the card you currently have is a PCI card, and you are planning on buying an AGP card, so make sure you have an AGP slot. About the power supply, i'm not sure if that would be able to fit into your pc. anyone else have a dell that would know? thats not an amazing power supply either...im not a power supply expert so someone else will have to help you there...

You do have an AGP slot so that part is fine.

Dell underrates their PSUs so you don't NEED a new PSU, but it still would be a good idea.

I would aviod that PSU you posted like the plauge, go with this one instead if you decide on a new one.

well, im not sure 400w is enough for a 6800XT... and the cheaper the PSU, the lower the True power rating. means, it may say 400w but its efficiency is so low, it cant even give 400w. expensive PSU has better efficiencies and so higher true power. i recommend checking the true power for your psu out first. its always written on the side of it on a sticker.

some people on the site said that it really needs a 500wat power supply, but several people have,like, 350wats and it worked just fine. ok, lets just say that i get the card and try to use it with my current power supply which says its 250wats. what would happen?? would the card not run, or would it not be as powerful?? anyone know?

if u had 250w running a 6800XT, i dont believe your pc will even start! lol! some guys have 350W but still works beocs their PSU has a high truepower say 320w, but u can get a cheap 500w psu with a truepower of only 250w too, which wouldnt work.
i say, try spending a little bit more on a better PSU, if u got a bad leaky PSU, it will make noises and lead to your pc crashing often, or even lead to smoke or fires!

ok thanks for all the help. i have about $150 now, so il have to save a bit more to get both the card, and probably that power supply that u suggested

Sorry dude, you don't seem to know what you're talking about. the 6800XT reccomends a 300watt PSU. His Dell has a 250. Dell UNDERRATES their PSUs to show nominal wattage, not Max wattage like most PSUs, so in fact his 250watt PSU is better than some 300watt PSUs.

Yes it will, the 8300 uses the regulat 24 connector. However you may have to drill a small hole in the back of the PC for the on off switch.

alright good. i just wanna make sure that everything will work with my comp before i order it. although, when i opened up my computer to check the wats, the power supply looked really confusing. idk if il be able to figure out how to switch it out. maybe il call the geek squad.......lol iv always wanted to call them.....

I say if it works dont change it. Id buy the card if it causes issues by a new PSu (the ones other ppl have recommended). If not youve just saved your self a few bob!

actually, i was thinking of doing that. thats what im probably gonna end up doing, and if i have any problems then get that other PSU. the main reason is cause i know how to replace a crad, just pull out old one and shove in new one, but after staring at the insides of my comp for half an hour, i still have NO IDEA how to even go about changing my PSU lol

that easy unplug it all take it out and plug it back in. NORMALLY the plugs only fit one way!

edit: remeber you have to change the driversor update them if you going to nvidia to nvidia that i see you are
